VMR is XP only???
Hi:
I think I take exception to "VMR is XP only". When XP first came out and with VMR7, it was an XP only feature. It seems to also be accepted and acknowledged that until DirectX9, VMR was not ready for "prime time". With the release of DX9 / VMR9, VMR is now showing it's promise. With the release of DX9, Microsoft states that this release also puts all the MS OS'es that DX9 will install on "parity" with each other (XP, W2K, WME, W98) meaning that all have the same capabilities and feature set. I have searched quite a bit and can find nothing that indicates that VMR9 is an exception to the OS "parity" that MS has stated. Additionally, I believe that I was using VMR9 with W2K and ZoomPlayer before going to the XCard HW decoder; unless I only thought I was using VMR9. Furthermore, VMR is more a function of the Video Card HW, Video Card drivers and DirectX than anything else. It seems the "button box" for VMR should at least say "XP or DX9 only" or better yet "DX9 only" since prior XP only versions of VMR were problematic anyway. If I am all wrong about this, someone please correct me and show me a reference. I have looked and can't find anything anywhere (besides Hauppauge / Sage) that says VMR (specifically VMR9) is exclusive to XP. DFA

Sage currently dos not support VMR9. It only uses VMR7 which is what the option refers to.

Is it fair to assume Sage 2.0 will support VMR9???

It have seen some posts to indicate it will, but I would not think it is high on their priority list since it does not offer anything video wise.

VMR9 is resource intensive...
You can actually lose a few things with VMR9. For example, most integrated video chipsets simply do not support the H/W acceleration of VMR9 properly. (SageTV runs great on my M10000 w/ VIA CLE266 video. SnapStream, which uses VRM9, won't run smoothly at all.)
So if you have an all-in-one mini system, odds are good that VMR9 means you won't be able to use that system for video, as DX9 will have to do everything in software. Even with a 2.5GHz system, expect 100% CPU usage when using VMR9 if you don't have hardware support for it. |

VMR9
Sorry if I was unclear... yes, VMR on the M10000 is utter crap... the DX9 software has to do all of the work, and the CPU just isn't up to it.
Sage in overlay mode works perfectly, though. |
