MVP stuttering on 50" Plasma TV
Hello,
I'm running into a bit of a problem. I have a dedicated server running SageTV and 3 MVP clients. 2 of my clients: - 1 27" LCD TV - 1 19" SDTV run nice with live TV ( TNT + Sat ) but the 3rd one is hooked up to a 50" plasma and have choppy reception on 3 analog (TNT) channels. The same channels run fine on the other clients. If I record a show from one of the 3 problematic channels from the Plasma and read it on any clients or using VLC, the show shows some stuttering problems. But if I start the recording process form another client it seems fine. To try to solve this problem I used this topic: How I stopped VMR9 stuttering (including 1080i) and solved all my sound issues but beside me not using the FSE mode and having an integrated graphic card (Intel GMA X3000), I noticed great improvement on other channels but it didn't solved my problem for the 3 incriminated channels. So, I'm open to any suggestion regarding the debugging of this problem. Regards, Cortechs.

I see no one has replied to this in the 4 days it has been up, so I will throw my .02 worth out.
First off, have you tried swapping MVP's? Maybe you have a bum MVP. Second, the 1080i studdering thread is not going to help you with the MVP's. MVP's have their own onboard decoder and no matter what you do to the server, it isn't going to affect the MVP. Third, are you sure it isn't the Plasma? Maybe it has having a problem the "conversion" of the Standard Definition coming from the MVP on those channels and converting the image to a usable format for itself (since the native resolution of your plasma shouldn't be 480i).

That doesn't make any sense at all. Regardless of where you start the recording, it's the same device (the server) doing the recording.
If the recording is screwed up, then there's nothing wrong with the MVP. The only thing I can think of is you've got a bum tuner, and somehow that tuner only gets used if you're on the Plasma. I'd try and track down which tuner these problem recordings are coming from. |

As usual, I agree entirely Stanger. Doesn't make sense at all. That's why I started throwing out random ideas.

Are you transcoding your video away from MPEG2?
If so loading up the server with transcoding back to MPEG2 will damn sure add up fast with that many MVPs. I'm posting this reply on my 50" Plasma, with the MVP it's totally studder free. Using the PC client it studders ever so slightly when panning. My setup is VERY simular to yours, as I too use onboard graphics. If the server is actively transcoding MPEG4 to MPEG2 for a totally different client you can get studdering in recorded video too. Basically don't transcode away from MPEG2 if you want super sweet MVP use. I have 5 MVPs total on a dedicated gigabit network, the only time it studders is channel tune between shows on the same channel and occasionally during anti-virus scanning. If you run CommSkip you need to throttle back it's processes, those add up quick too. HTH Collin |
