Ethernet Connection Lost ARP Cache

One of my data drive on the server got fried a while back. New one is in place and working fine. I've been trying to copy my .mp3 files from a Linux box (HP DEC) on my network...about 40 gig.

The files start copying and then the network connection on the server drops out after copying a random number of files.

If I try to repair the connection from the server, it says "unable to clear ARP cache." I have to disable/enable the adapter from network connections to get it back.

Searched and found a possible solution to the ARP cache problem. It said to disable a service called "routing and remote access." I thought that fixed the problem, then it happened again.

1. What is the process? Noticed it's disabled on my laptop. Who uses it?

2. Why is the file transfer breaking my ethernet connection?

I'll see if there's a new driver for my adapter. Any ideas?

PS Firefox 2 is awesome! It's got a spell checker built in and rembers what page(s) where active when it was shut down

Routing and remote access (from what I recall) is there so that it can route internet traffic on the server so that other people can use it. I think its also used for VPN connections. I have disabled it on computers with no problems.

You said that your hard drive got fried, what happened? If it was power related then the NIC might also have gotten touched.

Have you tried copying over small chunks of files to see if it dies out on those?

How are they connected to each other? is there a switch in the way. Try hooking up a crossover cable between them, or if they are gigE nics run a regular cable.

edit: just found this page to explain routing and remote access, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net...s/default.mspx

I restored the service, since it didn't seem to make a difference. Updated a bunch of driveres for the NIC (via lan Rhine).

I thought the transfer was going to work...got about 20 minutes through a 30 minute estimate then the server lost connection again.

Smaller chunks of files has the same result after a while.

No problems with the Lan other than the large transfers. I can surf the net or stream from the server endlessly.

What about the settings on the advanced tab of the nic? Should I have flow control enabled (hardware default)...but I uninstaled and it defaults to disabled. Both machines are connected to a router which is some distance away.

The server has fixed IP adress under TCP/IP properties. Should I duplicate that in the nic advanced properties?

Thanks

Next couple of things to try,

1) Power Cycle your router, leave it off for awhile.

2) Double triple check your server for correct network settings. I am assuming you are using WinXP, there should be no need to go into the advanced settings (unless you modified anything in there).

3) Try setting your server to DHCP, see if it works. If it does then it might be a network setting causing problems.

4) Try replacing network cables.

Unfortunately it could be almost anything. Do you have any other computers on your network? Since you can stream from your server no problem, there might be a problem with the linux computer. If possible try copying the data to another computer.

1. The router get's cycled all the time, and I remember having the same problem about 2 years ago. Also have the problem doing large backup of the laptop onto the server. I've used different routers and different cables in different houses.

2. I uninstalled/reinstalled the nic using driver from via. The mother board manual says it's a realtek, but the via drivers end up calling it Rhine. Transfer didn't work. Settings changed: Use fixed IP under TCP/IP with the gateway set to the router. On the advanced tab changed flow control from disable to enable, and I doubled the size of the send/receive buffers, and set the ip address to the same as TCP/IP properties.

3. Didn't try setting the server to DHCP automatic. I did put the fixed IP address in the nic advanced settings. Have noticed in the past that in the router's DHCP client table I've seen the server "HOME", even though it's set to use fixed IP. Just checked now, and it's not there since I put the IP on the nic advanced settings tab? Never understood why I used to see a DHCP address for "HOME".

I also disabled that remote service, and with all the above, the transfer worked. Just not sure what fixed the problem and/or if the nic is optimized for other network traffic. Plan on using the HDHR for network HD?

Thanks.
