Can you have HD playback skipped by ffdshow?

I use ffdshow to smooth out the poor looking SD, but it eats up a lot of my CPU. If I start using a QAM tuner, how can I avoid ffdshow trying to filter the HD and playing back at 2fps? Thanks.
