OT: DVD Ripping for Sage?

Ok, I'm wondering what people use to rip movies for playing in sage. I'm not all that interested in just ripping the vob's, since that'll take up alot of space, and at 70+ dvd's, times 4 gigs each, that's just to much space. I have a tool that rips to vcd, but I'd rather rip to a divx or xvid file. Preferably something automated. I could do it by hand, but ripping 70 dvd's, I'd like something automated. I have a machine I can use to run this on, CPU isn't the issue. Just need something to get the job done.

-Todd

DVD archiving would be a useful add-in. However, I think Sage should add DVD transcoding support to placeshifter first.

Sage should stay away from DVD ripping. Far, far away. They shouldn't even support ripping unencrypted DVDs, much less commercial DVDs.

That being said, if you're looking for something easy, I would recommend getting the full version of Nero. I think Nero Recode is a pretty good program, and the full version of Nero is pretty cheap if you find a sale (otherwise its about $70 I think).

That being said, it uses its own MPEG-4 codec, which probably works with Sage, although I've never tried it. Also, it doesn't work on commercial (encrypted) DVDs.

I know www.divx-digest.com has a lot of guides (or, at least it used to). You could look there for something free.

It depends what version of Nero you have. The OEM version only comes with the burning program (Nero Burning ROM), I think. Nero Ultra Edition includes several other programs, including Nero Recode. Recode is what can do backups.

But remember, it normally doesn't work on commercial/encrypted DVDs.

Note that any postings here pointing to DVD rippers that can break encrypted DVDs are likely to get removed... (see forum rules item 4).

I'm not worried about encryption of DVD's, I just wanted to know how one would rip an unencrypted DVD *g*.

PS: This FairUse Wizard works great though. Takes probably 2-3 hours but I have a machine that just idles most of the time (and it's a good processor/ram).
