New DVR Setup

I have gone through alot of the old posts, but am still a little confused.

This looks like the way to go, I just need help with the product selection.

Here is what I want to do....

I have a main PC that I want to use as a DVR. It already has a ATI AllInWonder card (this is not compatable, right?). The machine configuration is as follows - PIII - 500mhz, 256 Ram, 80g HD - Win XP.

I also have this set up on a wireles network (802.11g) to a laptop (P4 2.4 - 512mg 60 hd).

What would be the best setup to do this?

Also, is there a way to connect this to a standard TV via a wireless network? (Some type of wireless receiver?)

Thanks in advance!!!

Brian

You will need a pvr250 or 350 to do the encoding from your source [sat, cable, antenna]. You can use your ati AIW for video output only to your tv---you will not be using any of the ATI's tuner functions. Connect your video out on that card to your tv via s-video or composite cable. To receive the EPG updates, you computer will need to be on-line---so you can hardware a port behind the tv or put a wireless card into the machine to reach Sage for electronic program guide updates for your area [assuming you are in the US]. Someone else who uses client would be able to give you some simple steps to use your laptop as the client via the wireless network.

If you plan to watch the video on your 500MHz desktop, then you you'd probably want to lean toward a 350 so that your processor doesn't need to do the MPEG 2 decoding during playback.

On the client side, though, it sounds like you're looking for a very thin SageTV client. The perfect solution is not yet available IMO, but if Frey gets the SageTV client running on the Hauppauge MediaMVP then we will have it.
