I'm running into a strange problem. I can see my server computer in the network browser, and I can ping it. But SageTV Client says it can't open the port.
Both Computers are running XP Pro. Both have same subnet. No firewalls enabled on either computer. Both are wired LAN at 100Mbit. I even tried re-registering SageTV Client. What gives? Do they need IPX/SPX? I did have SageTV Server installed on my current Client computer for a couple days. But I fully uninstalled it. Could that have screwed something up? Any suggestions? Z AND YES, Enable Server is checked in SageTV. |

What step do you hit the error at? Does it backup/uncompress db? Or not even find it?
What's the exact text of the error? |

Connection Error
Unable to connect to the SageTV Server at: 192.168.0.110 There is no response received when trying to connect to the SageTV port. Please make sure SageTV is running on that machine and the server option is enabled in setup. [OK] |

I've also tried entering in the computer name instead. I've even tried \\workgroup\computername
Do I need to specify a port#? |

On your server box if you run netstat -na do you see a line something like this one
C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Duff>netstat -an Active Connections Proto Local Address Foreign Address State TCP 0.0.0.0:7 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING <snip> TCP 0.0.0.0:42024 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING <=== This is SageTV server <snip> If so, from the client box when you telnet to the sagetv port on the server: C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Duff>telnet 192.168.1.110 42024 Does it: 1) timeout 2) return a connect failed, or 3) seem to connect but then when you hit return give you a connection to host lost. Option 3 is what you hope to get. 1 would mean that the packets aren't getting to the server or it is dropping them. 2 would imply that the server is getting the packets but either rejecting them or doesn't have the port open (which you should have determined from the netstat results). t |

What happens if you try and start the client with the SageTV server program not running - does it still return the same error message, or does it prompt you to enter the machine name again to reconfirm [that's what mine does when there's a network or server level issue].
Also, what if the server itself is physically off? I've never specified a port#, but I've always had plain vanilla installs. Just trying to triangulate on the issue as simply as possible. |

Ugh, sorry guys.
That was really dumb of me. All I had to do was RESTART SageTV Server. That should be added to the SageTV Client PDF file, unless I missed it. Thanks a bunch, Zach |
