placeshifter internet connection help please

I can connect with placeshifter via my lan, but not through my wan. I am connecting through a linksys wrt54g.When I test the connection through the detailed set-up I can see the request in the router logs through port 8018 to the locator service. I then get "The Locator server could not connect the IP address registered for this Locator ID." I have port 31099 forwarded to my static address of my sage server. I don't see anything in the incoming log of the router. My IT skills are limited and would appreciate your help.

I suppose the lack of info in the router's incoming log might mean nothing is getting there in the first place, but have you checked the firewall on the server PC to make sure it will accept something coming in on port 31099?

I tried it with thw windows firewall disabled and it still would not work. When I go to "whats my ip address" it shows my internet connection being made through a proxy server?. Does this make sense and could this be part of the problem?

When you went to the Configure Placeshifter Internet Connection screen, did you configure via UPnP? If so, what did it say was the external IP address?

If you know your actual external IP address, try having the Placeshifter client connect via that instead of the Locator ID.

I enabled Upnp on the router and the routers address shows up. I tried to connect using that addresss and that doesn't work. Placeshifter does not connect. When I do use the Locator ID the placeshifter services manager (from work computor) shows locator found sever, but when I "connect" I get "sagetv is unable to connect to specified media server."

I'm no router expert either, so I can't really offer too many suggestions about that part. But, are you sure you tried your external IP address with Placeshifter? There are probably many web sites you can go to that will report your current IP address... of course, that may be what you were already referring to above.

I am starting to think this has something to do with how my router is handling the dynamic ip address for my internet provider. I am going to contact them to see if they can help. Is there a way I can see what IP address is being sent to the Locator service? The IP address for the placeshifter internet connection seems to be the router address, not the public IP address. Thanks for your input, I will keep plugging at it.

If you do a tracert (via command prompt) to your address, you'll get the DNS-resolved IP address. Not exactly what you're asking, but you can see what the locater has on file for you. Should be the same as your IP available from within your router www status page.

I think I've got it narrowed down to the fact my router sees its connection to the internet as a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, which I am told is a windows generated address. This also is the address that placeshifter is trying to use.Time to call in a few favours from the IT guys at work.Meanwhile time to visit the linkysis site to see why my router would list my internet connection as a windows generated 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.

I don't think 169.* is a non-routable address. If that's what you have from your ISP, it should be fine.

There are some www sites that offer a "what is my IP address" applet. You could try those too to see what they say.

Oh, is your router firewall off too? (at least for testing?)
