Best way to get answers to technical questions about Sage?

I have a technical question about SageTV core functionality that I'd like answered, so what's the best way for me to ask? Post something here or file a bug report?

Btw, the question is: Is touching files still nessisary for in-place recompression or do the file attributes no longer matter?

Definitely not a technical answer, but anecdotally, if I don't set a modified video (compressed or commercials removed) to the same date time stamp as the original, then the timeline displayed in SageTV is not good. It tends to think the show is a bazillion hours long. (that's a highly technical measurement file time stamp minus start recording time)

I suppose the easiest way to test is to just use touch to set the date/time of a video to something different.

EP. I found out that if you do not touch the files the timeline is totally hosed in SageTV when compressing to AVI etc... I touch every file even when I do a quickfix.

In many cases the quickest way to get an answer is to experiment and figure it out for yourself.

In cases where that doesn't work, I suggest posting to the forum. A private email to Sage support might get you an answer, but there won't be any public record of it that other users can benefit from.

I asked a while ago, but didn't get an answer. Now that the Sage dev's have some free time I thought i'd ask again

Its a tool you can use to modify the time stamps of one file to match another. This is (used to be?) nessisary for in place recompression of Sage recordings.

I would post in the forum so the info can be shared (as mentioned above), but if you get no definitive answer, contact SageTV directly.

A few/several weeks ago touching still needed ...

A few/(several) weeks ago I had a server with a gigabit/adapter/switch that kept on rebooting every few minutes for an unknown reason and resulted in the switch part of the card resetting the network each time. As I was using UNC paths for all video directories, Sage got very confused.

(didn't change anything it just stopped rebooting, might have been the forced ghost windows updates microsoft has been doing)

When I restored my videos from the NAS to the SageServer I forgot to touch them and the timelines were really messed up when I tried to watch the videos

This was a month or two ago so it may not be applicable to the latest release canidate ...
