But why doesn't the placeshifter play ripped DVD's?
I understand that the placeshifter doesn't "play" ripped dvd's...but can somebody explain to me why? Is it a question of demand? (Maybe not enough people want that feature?) Or is it a question of perfomance? (Maybe there's too much transcoding or jumping around or something?)
Maybe there's an easy way to make a simple man like myself understand? Thanks! rwc |

It does not play them even on the LAN, so it is not performance/transcoding related.
My guess is that it is the different playback engine in the placeshifter which makes dvds difficult to manage...

Strange as MVPs will play ripped DVDs.

I asked that question when the Mac Placeshifter client was introduced. The answer was that Mplayer, the engine used for Placeshifter, can not do DVD menus and the like.

Ahh.. menus.. I think enabling playback of the default or 1st movie in a disc would be enough to satisfy 85% (wag) of all movies out there.

Doesn't the regular sage programs use mplayer to display video? Or is it an 'poprietary' sort of player

Ahh yup, I ditch the menus and extras.

I don't think we should over complicate it. Just play the movie and allow for pausing and it is more than you already had.
ffmpeg or mplayer already have command line syntax for playing dvd files which you can pipe into sagetranscoder for streaming. B Last edited by bcjenkins; 10-04-2007 at 05:14 PM. Reason: spelling |

Many titles, didn't keep track. I remove all the uncoolness from the DVDs I used to rip. Now I have a DVD player just plugged into the server, hopefully before too long I'll have a megachanger. I don't really watch too many DVDs and when I do it's because someone brought it over, kids want to watch one that kinda stuff.
