A tip for those with hanging systems and USB devices
I have had my system crash on me repeatedly for a couple of months - since the middle of the 6.2 beta releases started. I thought that this was something to do with Sage or Java but it looks like the problem is down to Windows turning off USB devices to save power. To get around this you can turn off power saving in the drivers for your USB root hubs in device manager. I don't know why this started during the betas - maybe the way Sage handles the device changed or maybe Windows updated something that made it turn off the tuner more frequently and the drivers for it didn't like it. Whatever changed, this seems to work.
During working through this issue I did change my HAL to a standard PC without any power management capabilities. This did not help by itself. I haven't gone back yet beause doing so requires all the drivers to be re-installed and that causes some pain with reconfiguring displays. If disabling USB power saving doesn't help, try the basic HAL, but you lose the ability to stand by.
