WinTv Hvr-1800 support in linux?

Question. I am planning to ditch windows altogether, and built a cheap system that uses open source supported components. Anyways, if the hvr-1800 is supported in linux (as of 2.6.24, cx23885 chipset) then does SageTV have to explicitly add support for that card, or does it just show up as a generic device?

Also, assuming it is supported, how would QAM and sdtv functionality work in SageTV for that tuner? I'm guessing QAM and sdtv each have their own lineup? Does the SageTV linux version support that?

Very cool. I am assuming 1600 is supported too. The devices will show up as video# and adapter# where video = sdtv and adapter = hdtv.

It is my understanding that if the devices show as supported in linux, they will be supported in SageTV.

I am building out my new server which will have 1 1800 and 1 1600. I'll know more by the end of the week.

FWIW - I will be using DirecTV via SVideo and QAM tuning for the HD. I can also try OTA if interested, but it is my fallback.

QAM is working fine. Issues with analog, but I was also missing a key firmware. I can't interrupt the AI recording, but will reload after.

Can you please send me step by step on how you got it working. My main SageTV box died this week and i moved the cards to my main Ubuntu Server. Finished setting everything up and so far the 500MCE card is working fine and i have done full backup of everything. The HVR-1800 is also installed but i haven't done any of the ivtv driver stuff. I plan on doing that tomorrow or next.

BTW, i read on some forum that installing kernel 2.6.24 helps with some issues with the Analog on this card, is that true???

Sorry for the delay on this. I had a really bad week setting this up. Part hardware failure and part bonehead work on my side. From what I can tell, in 2.6.24.3 the analog portion is not turned on. SageTV will make use of the QAM tuner though.

I was initially running this on Ubuntu and switched to Gentoo when I thought Ubuntu was giving me crap. (see bonehead work statement above) While on Ubuntu, I can tell you to get to the 2.6.24 kernel, you'll need to enable the Hardy repositories and then make menuconfig in the source to enable the module for QAM/OTA.

That said, I was having a hard time remembering all the steps involved from my first build. The key is to make cure you install the firmware for your cards. I am not quite done with setting up yet, but when I am I'll report back on all steps from a Gentoo perspective. It'll be a while before I do this again.

PS - If you want 1600 drivers you need to grab the dev tree.
PPS - The 1600 has analog, but no QAM. Will try OTA too.

I'm interested in using Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1800 on a Gentoo dist also. I'm mostly interested in analog and it sounds like there are problems here. Are they surmountable? What other functionality will I give up?

So with the current version of Ubuntu & SageTV, will this card work? Hauppauge is no longer selling the PVR versions.

I'd actually like to know where to find an updated list for all supported cards in Linux. However, the one I found from searching only showed the PVR versions listed & appears pretty out dated.

Last I knew this card still has a problem with analog capture. I would recommend sending an email to the linux-media listserv, or searching the archives there.

I have since dropped the card due to the analog issues and am using strictly HVR-1600s and a HD-PVR.
