Any way to move a recording directory with compressed files?
Is there anyway to move from a recording directory (say d:\) to a UNC one, that will not remove compressed shows? mp4?
I have no problem following the steps in the FAQ, but what I find is that all the MPG files move and show fine afterwards, but all my compressed shows (*.mp4) no longer show in sage. (they are still on the HD). Is there anyway to do this? Thanks. Last edited by edbmdave; 12-11-2007 at 10:17 PM. |

Do the files all still have their ID numbers as part of the filename?
I don't know if this would be the issue, but did you try the repair_mismatched_media_filenames property mentioned in the big file moving FAQ? - Andy

Does the original mpg version of the same recording still exist?
I think you mentioned elsewhere that you were using a customization to compress the recordings; that might have an effect on how the compressed file is being treated as a recording. I don't know if this is important, but I noticed 'isRecording=false' for the mp4 in the log. Does the same thing happen for a file compressed using no customizations, or was that file created that way in the first place? Unless someone else has a suggestion, you could submit the info to SageTV to see what they say. - Andy

Good Question
I am bridging two threads now. I am using the Auto-Compress features found in SageMC, but I have chosen to use the native compression through it.
I have asked for some details around how that works. Do you know? http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...799#post251799 Suggestions? |

You could send it in... I have this feeling that I've got some email somewhere saying that some compressed recordings won't be recognized when moved to a new location, but I can't find the email... so either I don't have such a note or I just can't find it.
Was the original recording kept? If so, then maybe a compressed recording can't be automatically matched to an airing when it is moved, but maybe it could if the compressed file replaced the original & the original was removed. - Andy

I did it as a in-place compression, deleting source after completion.
Ok, I will open the bug report. Get an definative answer. Hate to loose all my compressed files, but if that is what it takes. (Ouch I can hear the wife and kids now...) |

edbmdave ,
The only way I have gotten compressed files to move to another directory and still show in Sage is that they have to have an avi extension. I have tried moving WMV MP4 etc.. and I lose the recordings with an AVI ext. It works fine. Sage seems to handle AVI exts. different from any other. I have a 500 gig Drive on my server with a directory as import I move my AVI files all the time refresh the libraries. Then they show as archived (i Simply unarchive them if I wish). This does not work with other extensions.

If it just a matter of the file extension, then maybe that can be handled in an update later.
BTW: you could look into using nielm's web server to reconnect the videos to their airings... or at least I think it can do that. - Andy

i have the same issue with .mp4 files - if i move them they disappear, but the original recordings move fine. My issue follows right along with edbmdave's, i convert & delete original using SageTV's built in conversion. though moving the files is not a necessity for me at this time, i figured i would try it with a couple just to see what would happen. it seems that after putting the file back in its original location, it isn't recognized again either.
this is after the repair_mismatched trick as well.

BTW: I heard that moving those other compressed file formats will be fixed in the next release -- they will still be recognized as recordings. (Providing the file names still have their ID numbers.)

I heard back from support, and they echo'd Andy's post. This will be addressed in 6.3.6.

6.3.6 worked 'sortof'
I retried my move from drive path to unc. For the most part it worked. However I have had a side effect I can't get rid off. (Will submit this as a bug as well).
I have approximately 900 mp4s that were from transcoded shows. (all done with sage native compression). All of my files show after I converted to UNCs. All of them show in Recorded TV. About 370 of the mp4s ALSO show up in my media center/imported video. I can't get rid of them there. I have gone as far are to remove all imported media directories, ( all my normal stuff did disappear), and even tried removing both mp4 as a valid extention on the seeker video lines, as well as all video music and photo seeker extension lines. I fell back to my previous configuration (restoring wiz.bin, sage.properties, moving files back to original directories) and restarting sage. Much to my surprise they were imported here as well. Again the UNCs and path these are coming from are not in my seeker archive lines (import paths for media), yet add consistantly. I even went as far as to rip out the UNCs restart sage, rescan the library. (they did disappear). Exit sage. Restart sage (Remember I have NO directories specfied for media import) and they still repopulated. Help??? All I want is to have them out my my imported media library. I did perform a test and deleted on of the files all togther. It did remove itself from my Recorded shows and Imported videos. Retoring the file caused it to come back in both locations. I am terrified I am going to have to delete all 370 of them to get this cleaned up. Last edited by edbmdave; 01-05-2008 at 01:45 PM. |

If a recording file isn't recognized as a recording, then it will be imported.
There's a huge FAQ about moving recordings & so on... did you follow the steps near the beginning of that post regarding having SageTV rename files with the proper new ID number before moving the files? If not, it is possible that their IDs no longer match, in which case SageTV will be unable to match the files to their airing info after they are moved. - Andy

Well, there could still be a bug, but you said you've already submitted it, so that's good.
For the ones that appear in both places: choose an imported one & check to see whether its recording list entry actually points to the file -- if you try to play it, does it actually play, or does it say the file can't be found? (Is the original recording's location still visible to SageTV, so it can verify that the recordings aren't at that location?) Since you said you did the repair process before moving anything, try exiting SageTV completely, then move a couple of the imported ones & restart SageTV to see what happens. - Andy
