.VOB playback problem.

I decided to try and save some space when ripping DVD’s. Instead of ripping the entire thing I am only ripping the main video .VOB and .IFO files. I ripped 4 movies like this without a problem, the result plays in PowerDVD Ultra fine and SageTV sees them as DVD’s.

The problem lies with trying to play them in SageTV. When I hit play it says it is playing, but nothing happens. The screen is blank and there is no sound. Though I do notice Sage run’s slowly till after I stop the “playback”.

Just as reference I am using SageTV 6.3.5 on a fresh install of windows XP Pro SP2. I did have the problem with SageTV’s decoder hijacking the system but disabled it with the regsvr32 command found here: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29054

So does anyone know why these ripped movies will not play in SageTV?

Did you use DVDShrink, or another program that rebuilds the files to make them "DVD compliant", or did you just copy the main movie files. The later won't work because it results in a broken "DVD".

I'm getting the same thing after upgrading to the latest version with SageMC too.

I hit the play button and the screen goes blank but then I'm getting a Video card crash from ATI driver.

When I revert back the the older version of SAGETV I don't have this problem.

Hmm I never thought of rebuilding the files. Just assumed it would work in Sage as it works in PowerDVD. But I will try it out now, and report back if it works.

If you do a "IFO Mode" copy, you end up with a rip with (near as I can tell) a bunch of broken references in the IFOs, I'm kind of surprised anything works with them.

For me I used DVD Shrink to get it to 4.3 gig size (DVD disk size) with the menus in tack. VOB files split with the .IFO files there too. Each movie is in there own directory too.

Like I've said before. Works fine in earlier version of SageTV and I think this may be a bug for certain configurations on some machines.

Well I ran the broken ripped DVD's through DVDShrink using the Re-author tool and the output works in sage without a hitch. Not sure why it does not work for you domc only thing I think I did different is chose DL sized DVD as my setting so that the files were not compresed in any way. Perhaps sage has a problem with the way DVDShrink compressed the files?
