HD Extender menus fonts
I haven't seen anyone else bring this up.
I have the HD Extender hooked up to my brand new Samsung 40" LCD via HDMI. The text in the menus and the guide isn't as crisp as what I'm used to with my HTPC running Sage (connected using DVI-HDMI). I have tried switching the HD Extender output to 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The menu quality on the last three is about the same. I am using the default STV with the 1080p theme. I also tried the 720p theme. The video quality on the extender appears to be the same if not better than my HTPC. But the fonts used in the menus appear fuzzy and maybe even a little noisy. I am not sure if this is expected as I haven't used extenders before. The menu quality in 1080p looks more like 480p but the Samsung indicates that it is getting 1080p. Is this expected ? I tried switching to the component outputs but the Samsung was unable to sync with anything higher than 480p. Not sure what that problem might be there. My cable box does great with 720p over component outputs. |

My HD100 is the same. Video quality is good, menu text and on screen display text and colors are kind of junky compaired to pc. I have some MVP's and they dont look as bad, they just react too slow

I suspect it's just stronger antialiasing - an aesthetic choice, not a quality issue.
The text antialiasing on my HD Extender might be more aggressive than it was with my PC based client, but menus look very nice at 720p to my eyes. At 480p scaled up to 720p, I get artifacts that look very different from the smooth but slightly soft antialiased edges of native 720p. |

There's a setting in Setup, under Multimedia that set "Output resolution." Trying changing that. And maybe even change "Native output resolution switching" to disabled.

I never did find a solution to this problem. Sounds like it's EB. I have tried different resolutions, different themes and different output ports. I have never used the MVPs so I dont know what the quality was like there.
I am actually thinking of abandoning my HDE because my PC client works so well. |
