Improved Picture quality using AIW 8500

I've got a 250 and AIW 8500. I installed the DVD view that came with the AIW and takes advantage of the AIW hardware acceleration for DVD viewing. The quaility is even better than before and before some objective people said that the quality was better than the live signal.

For those of you with any flavor of the AIW, try using the included DVD player.

Oh yeah, my CPU usage which dropped from almost 100% to ~50% after I added the Hauppage, dropped to ~25% when I switched to the AIW DVD player.

Is this the 'intervideo' codec that you're referring to?
If so - try the registry hack that's posted here - it supposedly makes a big difference.

I personally liked the Elecard codec better on my setup, but the Intervideo one wasn't bad at all.

No-he's referring to the specially modified Cyberlink decoder for ATI that comes with the ATI MMC software for their DVD program. It was modified to take advantage of the hardware on the card for IDTC. (I think) This is NOT a hardware mpeg chip on the card.

Aahhh , right
I tried that one, too... it was pretty good, a close second on my setup to the Elecard system - but my wife liked the look of the Elecard one on sports.. and she's the boss!

PS - currently the WAF is pretty high in my house.

Noob here -

I have an AIW 7500, but did not load anything except drivers and control panel. I figured, TV out quality has to be controlled via those, right? I've been wondering lately (and this thread probably states just that) if loading any part of the MMC would open up things on the board.

To help a noob - I should load the most recent MMC, including the DVD Player and choose the Cyberlink decoder?

Thanks!

Chris

you don't need to load MMC - just the dvd codec (step #2) from the ati website.

you will need an original ati disc to be able to download the codec though as it verifies itself against said cd.

once downloaded you will have to manually add the ati cyberlink codec into sage.properties file and then you will be able to select it from the sage video/audio/dvd menu's.

it really is a good quality codec and the one where i realized that i was getting audio stutter but that's a whole other (and solved) story

Don't download the new one. According to ATI's website, it only works with the 9000 and above cards. That's why I took a second look at the CD that came with the 8500.

Try using the one that came with your card.

It will work with the 8500DV-that's the one I'm running. Actually it will work with any AIW card. See info below from their web site.

Gerry

EDIT: Here's the scoop:

Q2: Which ATI products support MMC 8.x?

A2: MMC 8.x runs on all built by ATI RADEON™ cards, and ALL-IN-WONDER® cards from the RADEON™ to the 9700 PRO. TV WONDER™ VE, PCI and PRO cards also install this version of MMC 8.8. Since MMC 8.1, owners of ALL-IN-WONDER® cards have enjoyed MULTVIEW™ functionality by adding a TV WONDER PCI or PRO card to their system

The list you were reading was the list of cards entitled to a free upgrade. If you have an older original CD of the MMC software you have to buy a new CD for $9.95.

Noob question. How do you do this? I know how to open the file, but dont' know what text string I should add where in the file........is it sensitive as to where it is placed...and what do I enter?? Will it then show up as an eligible codec in Sage menus and settings....or, am I essentially overriding the selections chosen in the Sage menus and settings.

Finally, GbrNole, if we notice audio stutter, do you have a thread with the solution to that problem?

The MMC software works. I used it before snapstream and sage. The DVD software *doesn't* work without an install CD that comes with the 9000 or better. I've tried that too and that is what ATI's site states. This is consistent with my experience.

After you install it, it should appear as the option RAVISENT, I believe.

From another thread on the inclusion of the ATI Cyberlink decoders, I learned where these go.....as I tried to use the ATI Cyberlink decoders also.....however, I haven't had success getting them to show up in the Sage Drop Down Menu to be selected. Still, don't know the text string that must be added for the ELecard

almost every bit of audio stutter i was getting while watching dvd playback was through irq conflict.

if you experience stutter make it a first option to head to the device manager. click "view" click "resources by type" click "interrupt request (irq)" and look for hardware that is sharing irq's

for me my vid card was sharing with usb controller 1 and my pvr250 was sharing with usb 2 so the simple fix was just to disable those 2 usb controllers (i have 6 so it hardly matters)

after that all was good again.

Does anyone know if the ATI DVD codec will work with Powered by ATI products. I have a 9200 and I would really like to use this if it works. However, because I don't have an 'original' ATI CD, I am going to have to order one. (And by the way, ATI charges $10 for shipping which brings the total cost to $20.) Any help is greatly appreciated.

Without going into details the answer is yes, it will work. The card is basically the same card as what you can buy from ATI directly. There are differences but essentially it is the same card.

I apologize for the multiple posts here; the network at work is pretty buggy and doesn’t like to display sites correctly.
