Connect Extender Directly to Mac?

I have a Media Extender that I would like to connect directly to my Mac's ethernet port. Is this possible?

Thanks!

Did you check out the manual?

Ok point taken, the question was a little vague.

I have the media extender, and everything works great if it connects wirelessly (though it stutters because I have some non-g wireless stuff on the network). It works flawlessly if I plug it in hard-wired directly to the router (via a very long cable).

But, when I plug it into my mac mini via ethernet crossover cable, it reports that it cannot obtain an ip address. I tried swapping out the cable, same deal. Then tried hooking it up to my macbook, still no dice, regardless of whether internet sharing was off or on.

The manual indicates that you should be able to connect the MVP directly to a PC via ethernet, but never mentions anything about macintosh, so it's hard to tell if when they say "PC" they mean "windows," or "personal computer."

So my question really is: has anyone had any luck connecting the Hauppauge MVP directly to a Macintosh via ethernet, and if so, did you have to alter some setting on the mac to make it serve an IP address to the MVP?

Thanks!

If you connect it directly to the computer (whatever computer) you will either need to be running a DHCP server on the computer or assign static IP addesses to both the extender and the ethernet port on the computer (eg 192.168.0.1, 2, etc)

This guide suggests you can set OS X to act as a DHCP server :

http://www.aleph0.com/computing/macosx/dhcp-setup/

by enabling the ethernet port for DHCP only. You won't need to turn on internet sharing as the MVP won't need to access the net. You will need to check firewall isn't restricting UDP though

Good luck !

Give your Mac a fixed, private IP address, and give the extender a fixed IP address (same subnet, of course). Or, it's fairly easy to setup a DHCP server on your Mac.
