H.264 PC Playback problems

Just started playing with H.264 files and can not seem to get them to playback on my client PCs. I downloaded some demo files from the R5000 web site to see how this would work. They play back on the HD100 extenders fine. I use PowereDVD 7 set to overlay for video playback. HD content recorded with my A180 also play fine. Is there a specific video card needed? I use the Nvidia 6600 series. Some info would be appreciated.

Switch from Overlay to VMR9.

Tried that already, didn't make a difference, plus regular HD mpg 2 content play back would shudder.

The 6600 isn't well suited for hardware acceleration for h.264. You should probably plan an upgrade, maybe to an ATI part.

A more powerful processor will help too, but the graphics card is probably a cheaper way to go, most of the current generation graphics cards (HD 2XXX or Geforce 9XXX) have built in H.264 decoding hardware built in like the HD extenders.

"Have you tried, using regedit, modifying :

Frey Technologies\Common\DSFilters\MpegDeMux\NumBuffers

and changing from 40 to 80.

This is what I needed to correct stuttering h.264 playback from my Dish/r5000-hd.
"
That fixed my playback. I'm using Powerdvd 7.3 and the halli splitter that came with it, do the h.264 files play ok in media player classic? Do you have any other codecs trying to play it, like ffdshow, mine was I had to open ffdshow and uncheck one of the mpeg4 decode buttons. You can check whats going on with Graphedit.

I have a Celeron 420 1.6Ghz, O/c to 2.4Ghz w/8600GTS and it plays back mpeg2/h264 hd content on 1080p tv always less then 50% cpu useage.. I'm not sure you need that much power really. On my Core Duo 2.88Ghz it uses 10% cpu or something.

that's what I had to do on a client with a 6150 chipset running PureVideo.

Why doesn't it work with Overlay?
