Best conversion format to use
I need to create space for recordings so I am going to move some recordings to my imported video folder. What is the best format to convert to that looks the best but has the smallest file size?

AVC/H.264 is currently the best quality at the smallest filesize.

if you are talking about Sage's built in profiles, i have gotten very good results with "AppleTV Widescreen" for the ATSC HD content i record. Like dvd_maniac suggests, it is an h.264 encoding, and that is pretty much the best encoding we have right now.

Brits/Europeans/Aussies try AppleTV Widescreen compression please
I just had some nasty results using the Apple TV Widescreen profile on my DVB-T HD content. (Australia Channel10HD)
Picture spasmodically went to normal... to super bright, ghosty colour with huge digital blocking... and back to normal for a bit. Very strange. Maybe it doesn't handle DVB recordings too well ? Any Brits/Europeans/Aussies wanna try it please ? |

did you try to .mp4 file in another video playback software? i notice that in Sage, the .mp4 AppleTV profiles take about 5-7 seconds of playback to look "correct" but in VLC or Quicktime or Windows Media Player, they look perfect from the start. I figure it is some inherent problem with FFMPEG and h.264...
