Talking H.264 DVBDream SageTV Network Encoder

This was taken from another forum. I just copy/pasted the author main post regaring this great plugin for DVBDream (which supports H264 channel, what is lacking on the MyTheater setup).

All heils to Dinesh_H @ DVBN for all this great work, apart from the DVBDream for providing us a free DVB App

This is a work in progress. You currently have to use mfury's network encoder for mpeg2 channels and this one h.264 channels.

http://<Link Removed>

It works good on my rig. SageTV does max out the CPU occasionally on channels changes. Try it and post your results.

2/16/2008 Update:

This new version is much more stable. I ran it for a week and had no problems. It also has an ini file which can be used to set the port.

Use this with all channels. You can disable alll other network encoders.

2/17/2008 Update:

Found problem with ini port setting and fixed. Rolling Eyes

TODO: I need some help with CRC32 calculation in transport streams. I would like to properly rebuild these files on the fly. That would help make the recorded files demux properly in other applications. As it is now, SageTV can play them with no problems.
For more information check DVBN forum, the author has a thread running in the DVBDream forum

Run all week and is working great :-) Love it!

One quick question...I have noticed some audio drops on the H264 locals. Any one else seen the problem? Possible its my audio decoder (AC3 filter)

Hopefully I will order a genpix module next week, after that I will give it a try H264 support was what was stopping me to get that module (plus the integration with SageTV)

Ok I got my genpix module now.. what codec are u using for H264?? Plus did u did tweaking on the registry in order to get it to work?? I think theres some kind of probs with H264 playback of the dish streams... I had to change some buffers to get it stop the stuttering, but still i dont think its running at full speed....

And have u tried playing the SD content on regular Hauppauge MVPs?? I get lotsa video glitches (on my server/client it plays fine) it must be something on the MPEG2 format dvbdream is passing to Sage for playback

I'm actually using Sages built in H.264 for now and it seems fine. I don't have any stuttering on H.264. I havent tried the MVP with captured MPEG2 yet. Ill give it a try today. I think I saw somebody else over at DVBN with a problem with their MVP and MPEG2.

Ijust tried a recording and it seems there is some problems with it. If there is any fast motion there is some trails. Is that what you are seeing? All is fine on my client. Ill bump the thread @DVBN.

It looks like me that its more of a problem of the SageTV playback with that special stream.. ill record some minutes of it and send it as a bug report to see if they can fix the MVP fw to make that stream playable

I think so, it plays fine on the Placeshifter. It may be an encoding problem to the MVP.

Has anyone tried to inspect the ts file created by the plugin to see if they are created correctly ? I thought these files created by this plugin were not correct.

I'm talking about the h.264 streams and not mpeg2.

I'm using the plugin and have had similar problems, both on MPEG4 and MPEG2 material.

When I go into "Sage recordings" and select another MPEG file (like an OTA HD recording), it starts playing immediately.

When I select one of the files created by the plugin, Sage has to "think" for 10-15 seconds, then the player window appears, it "thinks" some more, a frame of video appears, it "thinks" some more, the video starts playing but stuttering like crazy. The stuttering slowly diminishes and after 60 it's playing almost smoothly. Same symptoms on 2 different clients (both PCs).

Weird.

DVBDream had a bug recording the TS to files, but from my understanding this plugin doesnt use that, rather than it gets the stream directly from the satellite via the API provided to the mods by dvbdream... So i guess D* has some 'tweaks' on their implementation of H264 profile...

Okay so I finally had time to try the "buffers" registry change suggested in another thread (changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Frey Technologies\Common\DSFilters\MpegDeMux\NumBuffers from 40 to 100 hex).

Wow. WOW! Did I say "WOW"?

This has basically fixed all the problems I described a couple of posts back. The files made by the plugin play wonderfully! Seems to help with some other files, too.

If you're having stuttering problems and haven't tried this fix, I'd highly recommend it!

Try sports events and i bet u will see stuttering again / dropped frames (1080i content)... even on my machine happens, which has plenty of cpu power and a decent card for H264 accel (which is of no use now)
