Apple Time Capsule as a Media Server?
Has anyone tried this yet?
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...nplm=MB277LL/A I've been thinking about upgrading to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N for a while now, and I could always use more storage. This seems like the perfect combination (except for the obscene price...) I'm a little worried about the Apple Bonjour protocal. Would that pose a problem for media extenders? Do you think the data transfer rates will be high enough to stream HD media? I've heard mixed reviews on other NAS solutions... |

And you need a wireless hard drive because....?
I don't know-Newegg had the Seagate 1TB with a promo code for only $249. Drives and media need high speed and you're only going to get that directly connected to the machine. IMHO. Gerry

You mean, besides the "cool" factor? But it's not really wireless if my SageTV server is hooked up to the gig-ethernet ports. The wireless-n is just a nice bonus for my laptop.
Both drive bays in my SageTV server are already full. I thought a NAS device would be a nice intermediate step (short of setting up a dedicated media server PC) That's my big worry -- if the Apple Time Capsule (or any NAS device) isn't fast enough to stream HD media, then IMO it's pretty worthless (except as a backup device.) |

If you can get a Gigabit connection to the NAS device you should be OK for the most part. I just wanted to make sure that Gig was where you wanted to go. Most people have been disappointed with HD over wireless. Some successes, but more disappointments I think.
