Some AVI files not playing through HD100
Hi all,
I'm having trouble with some of my avi files through the HD100. They play fine on the server and through a placeshifter client, but the audio skips (like a skipping record) and the video hangs on one frame... eventually jumps to another frame and hangs, etc.. I really don't know enough about it to figure out why some work and some don't so I was hoping someone could help me out. I see that it has AC3 6 channel and I just have a 2 channel stereo setup, is that why it's choking.. if so I would think it wouldn't play the audio but the video would still play.. Anyway, here's the info from MediaInfo of one of the files that won't play: =========== General #0 Complete name : C:\Movies\Movies\12 Monkeys.avi Format : AVI Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave Format/Family : RIFF File size : 1.36 GiB PlayTime : 1h 28mn Bit rate : 3488 bps Writing library : MEncoder dev-CVS-060307-04:23-4.0.1 Video #0 Codec : XviD Codec/Family : MPEG-4 Codec/Info : XviD project Codec settings/Packe : No Codec settings/BVOP : No Codec settings/QPel : No Codec settings/GMC : 0 Codec settings/Matri : Default PlayTime : 1h 28mn Width : 576 pixels Height : 304 pixels Aspect ratio : 1.895 Frame rate : 25.000 fps Resolution : 8 bits Chroma : 4:2:0 Interlacement : Progressive Writing library : XviD 0.0.0 Audio #0 Codec : AC3 Bit rate : 384 Kbps Bit rate mode : CBR Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel positions : Front: L C R, Rear: L R, Subwoofer Sampling rate : 48 KHz Coherency/PlayTime : 7447712 |

I've had issues with some avi's with AC3 audio, but I was able to get around it by running them through the mkvmerge GUI and putting them into mkv's.

sigh.. I was afraid of an answer like that.
I've tried so many media players and I thought I FINALLY found one that would play everything without having to re-encode my media. The HD100 is as close as I've gotten, but guess it's not there yet. |

It can handle most AC3 in AVI files, but there were one or two that wouldn't work unless I put them into mkv container. Also, its not even a reencode, its a 30-60 second process of just copying over the audio/video streams into the new container. Quite painless
Your issue actually reminded me that I needed to pass on the bad files to Sage support, unless there are serious issues with the video I imagine they'll be able to get it working. Last edited by evilpenguin; 03-05-2008 at 05:49 PM. |

Well I work on a Mac primarily (but my Sage / file server is XP) so I was looking for a Mac solution to this problem and can't find one (tried several settings in VisualHub).
I tried your solution with MKVMerge GUI and they play just fine now.. very odd. Thanks for the tip! |
