jesus, between the HDExtender announcement and this one, i've spent more time on the SageTV forums in the past 4 months than I did in the 4 years before that.

I'll have a mega-issue if the pre-order link comes online the same day that the HDExtenders are back in stock. How the heck do I explain that to the wife...

Hello,

Is there or will there be any program bundled that will be able to cut commercials from the streams ? I ask this because Im mainly going to get this for sports and sporting events can be long as is, even without the added commercials. BTW - Will this do 480p ?

This maybe on bit off topic I apologize if I went off topic or Broke any rules.

Does anyone know if it will be compatible with any Mac software? I know I could probably run it through Parallels or definitely Boot Camp, but I'd love to use it natively on the Mac side if possible.

Thanks, can't wait to get it!!!

Yes, I am down for 1 unit too.

One big question, does the software that come with the device allow editing (ie. removing the commercials) of the capture video file?! If yes, I am so in!!!

I'm suprised there's not been more action on this thread.

Mick.
The problem is implicit in the HDMI specs. From Blackmagic's site:
Quote:
The HDMI standard sometimes includes copy protection encryption, such as commonly found on DVD players and some brands of set top boxes. When connected to these copy protected sources, the HDMI specification defines that Intensity cards cannot capture.
That means that we'd never be able to record ESPN-HD or HBO-HD or probably anything else. I was thrilled the first time I heard about them, too. Then I asked around here, or maybe in AVS, and I stopped being so thrilled.

On topic: May 1st here I come. I really hope Sage has the HD-extender freeze-free by then.

Tried it on my C2D workstation - overclocked to 3.14GHz. Windows Media Player played it just fine with the Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow, but it took 50% CPU (I'm guessing the codecs aren't multithreaded, so it's basically 100% of one core). It appeared to be decoding at slightly below 25 fps. I guess with correct decoders and hardware acceleration it shouldn't be a problem with most of today's HTPCs.

I think the people using it are recording via the component inputs on the pro card. The same inputs that are used by the haupauge device.

It's more expensive than the haup device will be tho so probably not of that much interest. It's still cool to know that there are options available.

Yes, the couple of people successfully using this with Sage are using component inputs but more importantly than price is the fact that the Blackmagic cards don't have any built in compression. You must compress the video in realtime using a software encoder. This taxes the CPU so much that more than one is not realistic and even then you must have a pretty powerful CPU.

Ok, I just re-read the OP in the Blackmagic thread and I'm wrong about how CPU intensive it is. A core2 duo allows either recording 2 streams or recording one while playing another. A core2 quad allow recording 4 streams or recording 3 while playing one.

Still much more processor intensive than the Hauppage card will be.

According to AVeNVy it's possible with hardware that's accessible. I'm in Australia and our 'cable' options don't provide much bang for buck so I'm happy with dvb-t ota anyway.

Yes. I doubt that anyone's going to go out and invest the time, effort and cash to get this going with the Hauppauge solution being so close.

Can I ask a silly question: When recording from an STB do you see the guide in your recordings? In other words you have your Sage guide but don't you have your television providers guide on the screen as well? If not how do you avoid it?

Thanks,

Neil

There is a setting in most set top boxes to turn off their guide.
