Most Stable Platform

What is the concenus of opinion on what OS provides the most stable platform??

I am currently using XP proff but wonder whether running it on Windows Server 2003 may prove more reliable

......I've discounted Linux - Too Hard (for me anyway)

I was thinking about this earlier and was wondering whether it may run better on XP, I'm currently using Vista

jury is still out for me. I'm having issues btwn Sage & HD100, and nvidia agp (crashing XP at odd hours every month or so) software right now. i'd be running some flavor of linux if I could get wrapped around the code comfortably. for ease of use I'd have to say XP; haven't tried anything newer ( Vista sux).

I voted Other since WHS wasn't on the list. I know its core is Server 2003 but there are other parts that make it easy to set up.

Since I stopped using it as a client, it has been running 24/7 with zero issues. The HD Extender and MVP just work!

HERE HERE ! stable as **** here ! ever since I made the move about a month ago , it hasnt had a reboot even with cycle my network encoders for DVBS. And my STX's are running great.

Very stable even with sharepoint and photo gallery addins running on the same machine.

You should add OS X and the rest of the Apple OS's if warranted. Also, please define in use. Is this with respect to SageTV or general computing.

I voted Windows 2003 Server, but if this is for sage use, WinXP pro is extremely stable and more than good enough. If I had to vote for a SageTV OS platform, I'd change my vote to XP Pro.

I think stability has far more to do with how you setup/use the system than which OS is used.

Except for drivers, but again depends on target of the survey. I have had a number of driver issues in particular HDTV on the windows platform in the past.

I use XP Home as its the only OS license I have available.

I guess a lot depends on whether you run Sage headless or not.

I agree.
I run headless on XP pro. About the only issue I have now is occasionally a reboot is required if my usb-uirt fails to change the channels correctly.
I'd probably be better off scheduling a bi-monthly reboot on an off-hour just to have to never worry about it.

Almost 2 years running on XP and lovin' sage more and more each day.

Running rather flawlessly on Server 2003 headless for quite a few years now. As a matter of fact, I know I've had to reboot some time in the past, but other than the occasional power outage (Florida weather), I can't recall the last time I had to reboot my server.

Also very happy with my two clients running on Vista Ultimate.

I really hope I didn't just jinx myself.

How many do you think here have actually tried it on all those?

All I can say is I use an nlite'd version of XP Pro and reboot because I want to not because some hw/sw conflict/whatever forces me to. The one I setup originally later given to my father has been up for almost 7 months, this is because I upgraded his UPS.


As Stanger said above its more about how you set it up then what specific OS you use.

Also there is more support for just about everything in XP.

If you will never see the GUI (headless server), Vista\WHS isn't so hot anymore and linux seems a whole lot cooler.

As long as your hardware is stable and you don't install a lot of extra crap an XP install should be rock solid.

I didnt see an option for CP/M so I voted for XP.

Voted for Linux because
- in 99.99% it doesn't require reboot when updates are installed unlike MS OS
- file sharing works way better that MS Platform (I was running for a long time W2K3 + WXP as clients since it was extremely painful to setup the way I wanted and the clients were getting disconnected all the time
- software RAID (5,6) is available for free (had both HW and SW RAID under W2K3 before)

The most stable OS for me has been WHS hands down.
Windows XP pro and Vista would almost always crash or lockup at least once a week. The most I ever had a server up for was 13 days, now with WHS its been 18 days so far and thats how long I have had WHS installed (fingers crossed I havent talked one up).

Also, despite what some people say.. Vista with SP1 with stable hardware is rock solid as well. I reboot my Vista machine only for Patch Tuesdays or a much needed device driver upgrade. I play 3D intensive games at 1080p while recording 4-5 HD shows in the background without a hitch day after day without ever rebooting. You cant get more stable than that.
