Server only run as root

I just installed the new beta 6.4.3. It was installed on a clean install of ubuntu. I was using the gentoo install method with the older version but decided I needed a change. My problem is this.

The Sage Server seems to only run when I logon as root.
it will not launch at startup nor will it start when I launch StartSage. when i launch the client, it will act like it is connecting but then the window disappears.
I setup a user named "sage" during the Ubuntu setup and i put it in the root group. is there anything else I would have to do? also I noticed that root is the owner of all the sage directories. could it be a permissions issue?
this wouldn't be much of a problem but i am not able to autologon as root.

I am new to installing on a different distro but I have experience installing sage in general.

By the way, I should mention that while I am logged in as root. sage runs fine. I was able to setup everything and it works great.

Thanks

Did you set it up logged in as root?

cenwesi,
The first time I did. then I thought that might have been the problem so I reformatted, reinstalled ubuntu, and installed sage through the local account. I got the same results.
thanks for the reply.

Make sure the group mode for files and directories of the Sage install directory is rwx and root group.

I just checked it again to make sure. All of the permissions seem to be correct. it doesn't even seem to try to load.

in ubuntu, I installed Sage using the debs... it puts a start/stop script /etc/init.d/

i normally login in as my reg user account and then start/stop sage using
Code:
# sudo /etc/init.d/sagetv start
I'd recommend using the debs if you are installing on a debian distro (ie ubuntu).

I guess if you are want to run it as a regular user, then you'll have lots of permissions to change, including setting the permissions on the devices that sage will use.

I really dont care which user runs it. I really only want to be able to turn it on and have it autologin and auto launch the server. I need this in case of a power outage or something. After I have everything setup the way I want it, the server wont even have a monitor connected. I will look into what you said, stuckless, after I get home.
also, i did use the deb package.

Just a note, re using the debs.... If everything installed correctly, then you should have the following files or symlinks
Code:
/etc/init.d/sagetv
/etc/rc5.d/S20sagetv
Sage should restart on reboot. Initially I start/stop sage by using the sudo /etc/init.d/sagetv start, but after that, it restarts on reboot ~ every 300 days

Update: It appears that Sage places it's start scripts for all run levels, so even if you are starting in runlevel 3, it should still start.

If you run it from the command line as a regular user does it gives you an error message?

You could setuid the sagetv executable (chmod ug+s <sagetv-exec-pathname>). Not the most secure approach but for home use it's ok.
