ArcSoft H.264 Decoder
With all the talk of the ArcSoft decoders on the forum of late, is there a codec demo download? I've read that it comes with the HD100 ... but anywhere else? I'd like to try them out before buying but even then, is there a codec-only package containing these or are these only sold bundled with a product?
Thanks AWS

You can find it int the Total Media Theatre demo. Should be available from their website.

H.264 playback problems
When I play a movie through the ArcSoft program using it's native H.264 decoder the program is smooth and plays w/o any hiccups or tearing.
When I make the adjustment to my sage.properties file to add the decoder, videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=ArcSoft Video Decoder, and then play the same h.264 movie, the playback is tearing and has the occasional hiccup/stutter. What am I doing wrong? I'm using VMR9, overlay, decoders set to default for both audio and video... Shouldn't the playback be identical if I'm using the same codec? Thanks, AWS

Hi,
Have you tried FSE? I cannot get smooth H.264 playback in sage with xp without it. Jesse

Yeah, I'm using FSE, too. I think it's a bad nVidia driver. I'm using 175.16 and changed to .19 this afternoon. Still testing with the 175.19 driver. Looks like bad anti-aliasing because I'm seeing a bunch of jaggies on mpeg2 playback.
Frustrating. Video played much better in Vista but was crashing every few hours so I downgraded back to XP. I wish I could find an nVidia driver that supported 720 X 480. The 175.16 in Vista supported that resolution (standard TV/DVD) but not in XP, and also not with the .19 version. So I have to run 800 X 600. At that resolution the 8600GTS should have no problems with smooth MPEG2/4 playback. AWS

The combination that's working for me on XP is the 177.79 beta, using Overlay in Sage. I was getting slight occasional jitters until I set the sat box to only output 1080i instead of 720p.
Now it works great. Although I'm getting an occassional (every few minutes) hang for a few seconds, whether watching OTA HD or the H.264 stuff. Not sure if it's a problem with the 177.79 or with the Hauppauge driver, but I never had the problem before installing the HD-PVR and updating the nVidia driver. CPU usage is around 5% for H.264 playback, on a single-core 3500+ CPU. 8500gt video card. |

Are you also adding the audio decoder for AAC?

I had to set my STB to 720p from 1080p in order to stop the stuttering.
What is FSE? I'm trying to sort all the acronyms out as I'm very new to this and am trying to sort it all out. |

If you're asking me, I *think* the answer is no because I don't see the audio decoders in the list of available decoders within the Sage setup. Come to think of it, the video decoders aren't listed either. Should they?

Yeah what you want to do is set the audio decoder to use Arcsoft. I also noticed you said you're using VMR9. I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but switch to Overlay. I got this to work with DXVA on a Radeon HD 2400 Pro and _only_ an Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8 GHz) single core with ~3-10% cpu usage, 1080i.
the line you want to add is videoframe/aac_audio_decoder_filter=ArcSoft Audio Decoder |

Exactly. When I was ready to try the HDPVR test clips, I added both the H.264 and AAC decoder property lines to sageclient.properties...everything played fine. (Vista)

Oh yeah,
one more thing: You mentioned tearing? Have you verified in the NVIDIA controlpanel that you have Vsync on? I used to get a lot of tearing when watching HD in MCE with the HDHR, and it was all because of VSync. That was with a Radeon AIW AGP though, so YMMV |
