The PVR paradigm

Just an interesting note. My kids are 5, 3, and 1. For as long as they've been alive we've had Sage. I'm sure many other families have the same thing, but with Tivo or some other PVR. As an adult who grew up back in the days of 3 networks plus a few UHF stations, you don't realize that what TV means to you and what it means to kids are different.

Recently my family went to Taiwain for month. The whole time the kids would ask for TV, but they didn't just want "TV", they wanted a particular program, right then. Because why wouldn't it be available? They just totally couldn't understand the whole idea of a broadcast schedule and having to "see what was on". Why don't you just play "Diego", they would ask.

Anyway, I thought it was funny. My daughter also doesn't understand why we say we're going to "rewind" something.

On a similar note... I find it amusing when we go to other people's houses and my kids are watching tv... after a while one my kids will get up and and say "PAUSE, I have to go to the bathroom"... the usual reply is... "there is no pause on this tv".... And it's funny because I usually get a confused stare, as if saying, "what do you mean, there isn't a pause... don't all TVs have pause?"

I remember watching static on Saturday mornings while I was waiting for the morning cartoons to come on.

Yes I can remember the days when if you missed it, well wait a year it might be rerun.

On the flip side of that, we had taken some of our grandkids to a restaurant where they gave them paper placements and crayons to help occupy them while waiting for the food. One was playing tic-tac-toe and said we needed to push pause because he had to use the bathroom ...

If I'm lucky, my kids (also 5, 3, and 1) won't know what a commerical is

Now if only I can get my 1 year old to stop throwing the remote at the tiled kitchen.

I'm of that same generation - I remember static on Saturday mornings before cartoons started. My "return to earth" is that my mother-in-law actually still relies on the Sunday paper weekly TV Guide, but she doesn't get the paper, so we have to go through and make a list of things she might want to watch on Sunday and call her, since we usually don't see her until Monday (to give her the Guide). And don't suggest I invest in a Tivo for her - she has that magic touch that kills electronic equipment. Frankly, I can't believe she hasn't screwed up her current TV (the third or fourth she's been on in 10 years, all just plain tube TVs)

Along those same lines as above... me - the "older" guy who grew up without this technology - I'm often in the car and hear something and find myself reaching for a button to rewind it. And I hate when I have a radio program on at work and need to leave my desk and want to pause it so badly!
