What is "network encoding"?

My google and forum search skills have failed me on this one, at least in the context of SageTV.

What does the network encoding function do? I would guess maybe it transcodes and sends the signal out on the network ala Slingbox, but then again isn't that what the Placeshifter software is for?

You have the idea right but the use is as an input source. This is normally for larger systems that have more tuners then one mainboard can support. The second machine does the recording and streams it to the primary server for use.

This also allows for other network devices to intergrate with Sage, so it might be possibe to use a Sling as a network encoder. However Sling has done all they can to prevent such usage. It's a great idea though as Slings seem to encode very well and obviously can stream remotely without trouble. Also network CCTV cameras become possible as they have more open connection policies.

Thanks Collin.

That makes sense. Not something I expect to need now that I understand it, but good to know!
