Question about SageMC and extenders
I am a little confused. I am getting ready to move over to SageTV from VMC. I am thinking of running SageTV on WHS and using a HD extender. If I do this can I use SageMC? As you can see I don't really understand if the extender has its own UI or if it uses one from the host.
Thanks! |

Yes you can. I have HD100 and 2 mvps You can set them all to use different UI if you wanted.

That's great. Do you think extenders are the way to go rather than PC clients?

IMO, absolutely. You lose a little bit of control by not having a full PC sitting by the TV, but you also don't have to deal with codec support, bulky equipment, or noise.

+1 Totally agree. I had a PC client but had minor issues with codecs and USB-irt. I bought the HD100 and LOVE IT. As OnlyDarksets states, you do loose some functionality like DVD-rom/writer and such but with the HD100 you can playback H264 without a problem + no noisy fan.

I also agree the HD100 is the way to go. Only problem is they are out of stock at the moment - hopefully will be back soon.

I was thinking about both a HD100 and a PC (not SageTV) in my hook-up. I can put the PC in the basement so there is no noise issue. Then there is no downside that i see. Am I missing anything?

So far as I'm aware the downside is not being able to run a few plugins such as the Pandora and Netflix ones.

I meant I would have both a PC and the HD100 hooked to my AV receiver. Any issues anyone sees?

I'm not sure of exactly what you're describing here. Could you elaborate? Mick. Edit: Do you mean having a pc hooked up to the tv for gaming or something, a server in the basement and an hd extender? If this is the case then I'd consider trying the sage client on the tv rather than the extender. This will most likely work out and would make sense if you're going to have a pc next to the tv anyway. Last edited by mickp; 08-28-2008 at 04:34 AM. |

That is exactly what I was suggesting. You said it more clearly than I did.
An extender for Sage with a server in the basement. A second PC in the basement hooked directly to my TV for other PC functionality such as Rhapsody, games, etc. From the feedback I thought it seemed the extender was more stable and worked better with a HD-PVR than a PC client. I know this costs an extra $200 but I was looking for the most stable solution I could get. Does this make sense or am I wasting money for no gain? |

IMO if you've got the money to spend then the extender is well worth it. I've been through the headaches of PC client playback, and since I've had my extender I know I'll never go back!
