Sage and VMC?

Hello, all. I'm really new to this HTPC/PVR thing. I've been researching it for a while, and it's really confusing! I bit the bullet last week and just ordered the PC parts I needed so I could learn as I go along.

Anyway, I really want to watch/record live HDTV with the PC, but I also want to stream SDTV to an xbox360. It seems like the Hauppauge 1212 is the only option for the former, but doesn't work with VMC which is required for the latter.

SO! I'm thinking I'll just run both. Is this possible? I have a Hauppauge 1800 already, which I figure I can setup for VMC to use. And I can get a 1212 for SageTV to use.

Is this possible? Or does anyone have another idea to get the same result?

Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I believe you have to disable the VMC extensions to get SageTV to work in Vista. So I don't think using both will be an option.

What exactly are you streaming to the Xbox360? MPG files? You might be able to stream them to the dashboard just using Windows Media Player 11. Just enable Video Sharing in WMP and select the Xbox as a trusted device. You won't get the full VMC experience, naturally, but it actually works pretty good, depending on the file formats.

You might want to try it out and see, or check the xbox website to see what video formats the dashboard supports. I don't remember if MPG is supported or not, but I do know that some of the newer formats (xvid, divx, H.264, etc)are ONLY available through the dashboard, and not in VMC.

You can still stream recorded TV to the Xbox - the problem arises when you want to stream live TV.

I'm not sure of all of the issues, but at a minimum you would need to have a separate tuner for VMC that Sage doesn't know about. This will avoid conflicts where both Sage and VMC try to record using the same tuner. There may other issues - but this is certainly one of them.
