Is There Any Way To Sharpen The Video From Hauppauge Tuner Cards ?

Is there any way to sharpen the video from Hauppauge tuner cards ?

My recordings made at Standard DVD settings seem a little soft focus, and I am wondering if they could be sharper?

I have two WinTV-PVR-250 's.

I found some registry hacks at the sagetv.com faq.

" What can I do to improve the performance of the video quality? (For Hauppauge users)

Try out our registry performance increase for Hauppauge users. This works when you are also using the InterVideo NonCSS Video Decoder for Hauppauge as the selected Video Decoder in SageTV Recorder/SageTV.

Just change these registry settings to 1 while SageTV is shutdown:
HKLM\Software\Intervideo\Custom\Hauppauge\VideoDec\Dxva
HKLM\Software\Intervideo\Custom\Hauppauge\VideoDec\Hwmc

For the newer decoders the location is:
HKLM\Software\IviSDK4Hauppauge\Common\VideoDec\Dxva
HKLM\Software\IviSDK4Hauppauge\Common\VideoDec\Hwmc
"

But those registry entries do not seem to exist in my setup.

Does anyone know if it is possible to sharpen the picture and how ?

Thank you.

First, if those entries don't exist there's probably a good chance you haven't installed Hauppauge's Mpeg2 decoder. I don't think there's a good reason to either. It's a decent decoder, but the newer decoders, namely WinDVD7/8, PowerDVD7/8 and Purevideo, are probably better.

I'm not sure how "soft" your recordings are. Standard definition TV isn't very good quality to begin with, so it tends to look quite soft from a computer monitor. What you're seeing might be as good as it gets.

If I remember correctly, Nvidia's video card drivers do have a setting to "sharpen" video playback. I think it might only work with the Purevideo decoders, but you'd have to ask someone else to make sure. I tried it out a year or so ago and didn't think like how it looked, but maybe your preferences are different than mine.

Thank you reggie14 and Apap.

reggie14, Now I understand why I could not find those registry entries.

Apap, I did find a Sharpness registry key ( and some Noise Reduction keys too) on the site you suggested. I will see if I find them in my system and then try changing settings.
