HD PVR s t r e t c h e s 4:3

My HD PVR (now with 5.1 Audio!!) does fine with 16:9 HD, but stretches all 4:3 content. All settings seems to be set to use source for ratios, but all 4:3 content is streched. How does one fix this?

Are you viewing the recordings on the HD100? I noticed this also, however, it only does it on the hd100 not on the sagetvclient that is 16x9 also. I have my STB set to send 480p on all 4:3 content. 720p on all HD content regardless if the source is 480i or 1080i. Its annoying, I hate the stretchy look.

I've noticed this too on certian channels.

I just set the aspect ratio to 4:3 in the options menu to correct it.

I Raised this as an issue a while ago. IF the video is marked as 16:9, but is actually 4:3 it gets stretched.

There was no solution except to recode the video so it was marked as 4:3 aspect and then use the "source" aspect ratio when playing it.

Just curious, what 4:3 content are you recording with the HD PVR?

My HD PVR is connected to my digital Comcast HD STB. I have nearly all the channels enabled, HD and SD. In the STB configuration you can set the output method for different content. This way you can force 1080i to 720P etc. There is also a breakthrough for 480 resolutions, where in you can also display them in 720. However, when doing this you get the column bars at either edge of the video. I don't like doing this as it screws with my aspect ratios for programs that are show in letter box but on a 4:3 broadcast. Thus I have my STB set to send 480i soucres as 480p. I only see the stretch problem on the HD100. I have not looked at how the video is marked. Do you mean marked in the guide or marked in the video properties or what exactly?

Basically everything from the set top box that is not HD is, naturally, 4:3.The stb put its out typically as 480p, though I suspect much of it is converted 480i. In any case, the Sage software sees that it is 480p, and yet stretches it.

When I first loaded the drivers and ran Sage, it didn't do this. It seemed to have started after I made some changes to the guide. One other thing i did was to remove the HVR 1600 as a source so I could clean up the guide.

Also, not using HD100 or place shifter yet.

480p can be either 16x9 or 4x3, depends on how it's flagged, and often times that flagging is lost in the analog conversion.

If you're recording 480p, you're using an HD PVR, it's possible it just tags 480p+ as 16x9. No other supported capture device records above 480i from a cable box.

Is this tag info supposed to show in the detailed info screen for a recording?

Not actually sure, I've never recorded any 480p from the HD PVR.
