Setup - Why Arcsoft for MPEG2 rather than MPEG-4?
I have an HD-PVR in my system and I have Arcsoft selected for MPEG2 Video Decoder Filter and Sage TV Player for MPEG4. This is working fine excpet for a little bit of stuttering.
I thought that the Arcsoft Codec is required for H.264 files and isn't H.264 a type of MPEG-4 file rather than MPEG-2? If so then shouldn't Arcsoft be the decoder for MPEG-4 rather than MPEG-2? But I don't have Arcsoft as an option for MPEG-4? |

The option to use Arcsoft for h.264 is set in the .properties and is NOT settable from the UI.

From what I understand ArcSoft can do both MPEG2 & MPEG4(h.264), but the reviews of MPEG2 when using ArcSoft are not good. I think most peope are only doing MPEG4(h.264) with the ArcSoft decoder.

This is true. I'm actually using Cyberlink for both because it also uses the hardware acceleration of my card for both. I think by default Sage will use Arcsoft for h.264 if it is installed. I think Sage still favors setting the Sage decoder for mpeg2 by default.

My bad - I thought that you selected Arcsoft in the UI under MPEG-2 since that is the only place that you can actually select it. I did have the videofram H264 setting in Sage.properties set correctly.
What do people find as the best settings for MPEG2 video decoder. I have noticed a bit of stuttering in MPEG-2 playback recently - both SD and HD (OTA). I am wondering if I am not using the best decoder. My options are Arcsoft, Sage, and ATI. I have tried all 3 and ATI seems to give the smoothest playback (FYI my video card is a HD3850 and my CPU is E8400 - OS is Vista HP.) |
