License questions

I am switching my main Sage from a regular PC to WHS. Can I change my license - if so what do I have to do - just enter the key in the WHS version or do I have to somehow deactivate the current Sage Media Center software?

I may just decide to buy another Sage Media Center license as I will be buying another extender and if you buy the bundle then you get the software for $50. I will likely need another client license anyhow so $20 extra is not so bad to have the flexibility to have an additional copy to give me more config time for the new WHS box.

By the way, can I use a Media Center license for a client? Of can Media Center connect to a WHS Sage server?

SageTV for WHS uses the same license as for Windows XP or Vista. You should uninstall the software from the other PC unless you have separate licenses for each PC.

To use the full SageTV server installation as a client of another server, use the -client command line parameter; see Appendix D in the PDF manual for details.

Great - right now I am just running a trial copy on my new WHS box. As I mentioned above I will likely just be an additional full license (in conjunction with another extender) as the incremental cost is only $20 when buying the bundle. After I do that can I transfer my one Placeshifter client from the existing PC to the new WHS box?

It should just be a matter of unregistering on one system & registering on the other. As the manual points out, be sure to do the license registration process while SageTV is not running.

So as not to clutter the forum with yet another license question, I thought I'd just tag onto this thread.

I'm still confused about Sage licensing. My situation is this: I installed Sage probably 2 years ago (whenever version 6 just came out) and bought the license that came with an avermedia tuner card and remote control. I purchased no additional licenses.

I used it about a year on my single machine but was very frustrated with lockups, freezeups, etc. mostly due to sleep problems. I ran on a single dedicated machine for both viewing on my 50" TV, as well as recording (just 1 machine).

I uninstalled and did something else for a year but always felt from reading the forums that the "right" "stable" way was to do a client/server setup. Now I've got a headless dedicated "always on" machine in the basement running WHS. I've read on the forums here that WHS works well with Sage. So I would like to install my Sage on my WHS server. I would like to watch TV however on the computer sitting next to my TV. So my new setup is two computers (one recording server, one client).

Finally, my question: If I want to retry Sage do I need to purchase any additional licenses or would I be good with what I already have.

Your existing license should work on WHS. If you want to run a client on another computer, you'll need a client license of some kind (either SageTV Client or Placeshifter; see the FAQ for detailed differences, but for maximum configurability on a stationary client you probably want SageTV Client).

However you might also take a look at the new HD200 extender, which lets you watch TV in another room without a PC or a separate client license (assuming you upgrade your server to SageTV V6.5).

I thought that I read somewhere that with the WHS version of SageTV you get 1 client license since the server is really meant for playback - is that not the case?

Yeah, that's my question. Do I need to pay for something more to watch on my TV PC since I will never watch on the server.
