I vote in favor of parenthetics for the year of release and am willing to rename files accordingly.

I actually have idea that I'm kicking around where I use ffmpeg to get the duration of the video and then take that into account when I'm trying to decide if its a movie or TV show.

I actually use about 12 different RegEx's to check for the various different types of TV show naming formats that I know/allow. And one of those formats, my least favorite, has files named like this...
Code:
The Simpsons 722.avi = The Simpson's S7E22
But if you extrapolate that naming convention into Season 20 (which the Simpsons just hit last year) you run into the real problem...
Code:
The Simpsons 2008.avi = The Simpson's S20E08
And if i'm going to allow TV shows to be named in that format how can I tell the difference between the above and this...
Code:
The Simpsons 2008.avi = The Simpson's Movie (2008)
Okay, now I see what you're having an issue with. I think that's a very poor naming convention and I'd actually be tempted to have people run a quick batch script on their filenames to prefix the 7 with S and the 22 with E. Those people should know their filenames are set up that way and would be better suited to make the decision to "fix" that FOR YOU, rather than having you attempt to compensate for it.

As you also suggested, they could just as easily run a script to enclose the years in parenthesis.

\\nas1\media\videos\dvd\name of movie

and I use
\\nas1\media\videos\shows for shows recorded off of tv ... (Movies recorded off of TV that is - as they are often 'edited for content and to run in the time alloted')

although like others I may change to include genre in the future.
