Whether you record in 480p, 720p, or 1080i doesn't technically matter. If the bitrates of each are the same, then they will take the same amount of space. Since 480p is less resolution than 720p, you can use less bitrate to get a picture without compression artifacts in 480p. You shouldn't have your bitrate set to max because you are wasting space.

I am currently defaulting to the highest h.264 (Best). I thought that the HD-PVR will create smaller files with 480p than with 1080i for example, so does this not help?
