Latest Version Java Today Ran Havoc on my File Server

Well - I installed the latest version of Java and it worked fine on my client workstations but it really did a number on my server.

First, I can't explain any of this but I could not even ping my server after installing the latest version. Also, I could not get SageTVService to run at all. After launching it, I could not even see it in the task manager. Also, the drives were not available to be viewed from my workstations (which I guess is expected if I could not even ping it).

So, I tried a system restore and that did not seem to work. I then tried to uninstall Java on my server and still no luck Finally, I went to the program files\java folder and just removed the latest Java and then my system came back up. But, now SageService won't run.

Yes - Java has done a number on my server at this time and I don't want to pull an image backup because that takes time but I might have to.

I don't understand why this is happening so often to people nowadays. Before attempting any upgrade of java you MUST STOP the SageTV service and/or quit SageTV. (not sleep to the tray.) If you tried the uninstall after the systems restore that is why that didn't work. All you need to do is uninstall or remove java. Make sure the SageTV service is stopped. Go to the Sun java site and donload version 6 build 12. Install it. And then reboot your server. All should be back to normal. Turn off any automatic updates of java and notifications.

I'll attempt another reinstall later when I have more time but I did restore the old Java folders from a backup and the everything is now working again. I'll try to install the newer version of Java later but at least my server is back up again. I'm just surprised Java can cause this problem where even a system restore fails - but it's working again for now.

Thanks,
Mike

What's with all the people updating their Java lately? I haven't manually updated mine in ages. Last time I did was when Java 6 came out significantly increasing performance. Anymore I just run whatever Sage installed.

Since Java 6 update 10 they changed the installation directory. Previously, you would get a new directory for every Java update.

Now it always installs to C:\Program Files\Java\jre6. Update 11 would tell you there were files in use during installation and wouldn't continue. Update 12 doesn't seem to and they obviously have some problems dealing with files that are in use.

As you have said in numerous threads Stop SageTV and SageTVService (and I stop Comskip Monitor) before you install the update.

I'm with Stanger89. Unless you need a specific feature thats in the latest Java update, don't update it. Just run whatever version that SageTV installs.
