SageTV mentioned in Popular Science
Just finished going through this month's copy of Popular Science. One of the "Ask A Geek" questions was about buying a Tivo since their VCR wouldn't work with the transition to digital. The author discusses the usual benefits and problems with Tivo vs the cable/sat DVR and then recommends alternatives such as SageTV. Biggest problem is that being a short answer he simply states it's more time consuming and not as capable as Tivo.
While there's definitely more to it than the author discusses if the person isn't sure if they need or want a Tivo they probably don't need to be overwhelmed by the discussion.
