Defrag

I would like to set up an automatic late night early morning defrag. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I was having playback problems then noticed that my drive was 100% fragmented. Doing a defrag fixed it but I switch out my one PATA drive for a two SATA Drives setup as a RADE Stripe setup. Everything is working now but I still want to keep the fragments low.

I'd suggest JKdefrag. Free, but you have to make your own schedule.

I use:
"C:\Program Files\JkDefrag\JkDefragCmd.exe" -a 2 -u DisableDefaults -l E:\jk_nightly_all.log

This just defrags, not move the files to the beginning of the disk. Normally takes about 10 minutes (or less) to run, but depends on the number and size of fragminetated files.

64K clusters pretty much eliminate the reasons that a defrag are needed. For that matter, for most people defrag won't make that huge of a difference. Go to your run prompt and type in PerfMon and click on System Monitor, and then the Plus icon and choose Physical Disk performance object. Select the Split IO counter and total transfers per second. If you see a lot of split IO traffic then you should defrag, but otherwise it won't help your problem.
