STV noob-gui gets hung up

Just installed STV last night; so far, so good.

The only significant problem I've run into is that frequently the gui will stop responding, like it's falling behind on the command processing, and then executing 1 command every 2-3 minutes. Agonizing.

I am using a FireFly USBIR remote configured as an MCE remote, so it's occurred to me that STV does not like that, even though it seems to work most of the time.

Anyone know what's going on here?

I'm not sure what the issue is that you are describing... is there a spinning circle in the SageTV UI showing that SageTV is too busy to respond, or is it simply not responding to your remote?

No spinning circle-gui is just agonizingly slow or not responding.

Waiting several minutes, the gui executes one command and then I have to wait again.

Sometimes attempting to terminate the gui prompts it to speed up a bit.

I have also seen situations where two gui screens seem superimposed on each other.

Since this is a PC, if you use mouse or keyboard instead of the remote, how's the response?

Also, if you have menu screens superimposing themselves on top of each other, then something isn't configured properly. Did you install any customizations? Are you using the built-in hidden features?

Are DirectX and your video card drivers up to date?

Is Java up to date?

The same as the remote.

No custom, no hidden features (what's that?)

I updated them earlier this year.

:dontknow: Doesn't STV check for the right versions on installation?

It checks that Java has been installed. You can use the Info command (Ctrl+i) while on the Main Menu to jump to System Information, where the Java version will be displayed.

Since this is a trial w/o any long history you need to preserve, I would consider uninstalling SageTV, deleting the entire SageTV directory, then reinstalling. Maybe there was a problem during installation.

Is the cpu maxed out? If so, is it from SageTV or some other process?

The debug log might contain info if SageTV is running into a problem.

CPUs show unloaded. I will check the Java tonight.

You should also check to make sure MCE is not running in the background. Before I disabled the ehome service I used to have MCE doing things in the background and it was slowing everything up. This was whenever I would use an MCE specific button on my ehome remote like LiveTV or Guide or the Green Button, for example.

This happened when setting Favorite options while checking the channel to record box, and moving to a different button before the box is fully checked.

There may be other circumstances as well.

I'd update the java. There was a new version out 3 or 4 weeks ago that many (including myself) are having good luck with.

I upgraded the Java and have not seen the problem since.

Still early, but thanks for the suggestion!

Problem is still there, so the Java upgrade did not fix it.

Less frequent, but the GUI is still locking up at random times.

Seems to only respond to standby (shutdown).

Have you tried increasing the SageTV Java heap size? It's a registry setting that you set using the SageTV Registry Settings app in the Downloads section. SageTV can really start to slow down if it runs low on memory. You could also try disabling all animation and hardware acceleration options in the Detailed Setup to see if it's a graphics problem slowing down SageTV.

I have not tried that.

I was really hoping that SageTV is not a source of endless stability problems that BeyondTV was (is).

Why does the memory usage continue to grow? Is there a memory leak?

I set the Java heap to 500K. SageTV is steady at <176K usage. Most of any process.

I am still getting gui lockup; esp when trying to delete files.

The only thing I can do is exit the app and restart.

What kind of stability problems were you having with BTV? Similar?

Did you ever check the logs to see if there was any indication of why it was hanging? You might also consider submitting a trouble ticket with SageTV.

BTV scheduling and recording services would hang the machine after 1-2 days.

Appeared to use all graphics resources as there were numerous display artifacts.

Never the gui.

Not yet.

Will they look at a Trial installation?
