Digital TV Lip Synch?

The synch between people's lips and the audio seems tb getting worse instead of better.

I first noticed it on PBS months and months ago and thought "Well, their budgets are pretty tight...."

But lately, I've been noticing it on major network programs - ABC, CBS...

Sometimes it's so bad there's no recognizable connection between lip movements and what's coming out of the speakers.

I don't think it's an artifact of recording shows bc some of the worst cases have been coming in through our digital converter box directly into a TV.

I'm even seeing it on sixties-era B/W clips.

I recall reading something about there being no auto-synchronization of sound/video, but that's all.

Can anybody elucidate?

Is there any hope of it getting better - or at least less bad?
