SageTV licensing
Hi,
I have 2 HTPC's, each with it's own 500gb hard drive. I am currently running mythtv, but want to experiment with sage. Right now, I have one htpc as the master backend, and one the slave backend, and each can see all shows, and I can categorize/filter them on each to see what I want. I can flag a recording to show in a certain recording group, to then show in that group when I filter later. Does sagetv have a similar feature? It has been handy to segregate my shows from my wifes/kids and vice versa. How does sage handle this? Also, do I need to pay for a copy for EACH system, or can I install on both? Thanks for any help Dave |

To have two PCs with tuners operate as a single system you'd need to run SageTV Media Center (server SW) on both, and you'd configure one as an encoding server (slave).
Yes, you'll need a license for each PC. The SageMC custom interface may have the grouping/filtering features you're looking for, but I'm not sure. |

Or if all your tuners are on one machine (or can be moved there), then you'd want a server (recording) license for that machine, and a less expensive client (playback) license for the other. Even in the client/server setup, you can still administer the system and manage recording schedules and so on from any machine; but only one of them will do the actual recording.

Ok. Yes I can have all tuners on one system. I have 2 HD homerun units, which are networked tuners. So they are not really "physically" associated with either machine, they stream the data over the network. So I guess I could set them both up on the server, for a total of 4 tuners, and use the other box with a client license.
So then if each machine has a hard drive, and I want to use the hard drive on the "client" for storage of recordings, I guess I'd just set up a windows share and map to a drive on the server, and set it up as a recording directory on the server? Or is the sagetv server itself aware of drives installed on the clients, and use them apart from having to share them via windows? Or does the client license still actually let you set up a local recording destination directory? Thanks |

best to NOT use drive mapping with sage. It doesn't work when running in service mode. better to share the drive, and actually use the UNC path to point sage to it for storage. For performance, though, You may prefer having all the drives in the server.
