yes ( don't know about unfortunately) it does begin recording a channel when you watch it. If it did not begin recording you could not rewind, pause etc. So this is a good thing.

The problem is that it has effects on the system. You end up with a partial recording that you have to manually erase later. It also can eat up a lot of disk space, especially if you leave it on accidentally.

If you set the SageTV options correctly it will automatically delete any remants of files left from partial recordings of a channel change. So it won't "eat up" any disk space long term.

Ok, occasionally partial live-tv recordings don't get erased, but I realize now that what is clogging my system is Scheduled Recordings that end up in Partial Recordings because we're in a fringe OTA area and sometimes have poor reception (and, why do most partial recordings end up there but some end up in regular Recordings?). Any way to get Sage to delete those automatically?

Since I don't have this issue I would guess there may be a coorelation between the length of time the recording is suppose to be and what length those partial recordings are showing. Don't forget that Sage can continue a recording and you may end up with several files xxxx_1.mpg, xxxx_2.mpg, etc that Sage can play back as the full recording by seamlessly joining and playing them. You may have 5 files that represent the entire recording. If you do that is why Sage keeps them.
