Best filesystem for recordings

The windows version of SageTV recommends a 64k block size for the file-system with the recordings. This obviously only applies to NTFS.

Is there a recommended file-system for linux?

I'm currently running ext3 created with "mkfs.ext3 -T largefile".

I use XFS also because it was labeled "best" and it works fine for me, same as loonsailor states in the next post.

I'm very low on the "cool" scale - I only have two tuners and still running a 32 bit OS!

I also use xfs, simply because I found a thread here somewhere that seemed to indicate it was "the best". It works fine, but I only have three tuners, which makes me less than half as cool as bcjenkins ;-)

If you really want to know what's up with file system performance, there were extensive tests published in the last few weeks in Linux Magazine in several parts (http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7497/1.html, http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7518/1.html, http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7525/1.html, part 2 of this last one to come soon, I expect). Based on what I see there, I'm not sure if xfs really is the best choice, but it works fine and I don't intend to fix what ain't broke.

I use ext4... but with only 1 tuner (hdpvr), so i'm only 1/7 as cool as bcjenkins.... but on the bright side, you are only 3 times cooler than myself

All I have to say is that the new TV season kicked off and I found more tuners running at once than ever before and no hiccups at all. Plus, you all now have something to aspire to.

I did some fairly generic "linux best filesystem" googling and the concensus seemed to be XFS for filesystems with large files.

Now, just need to find some temporary storage for all my media files while I'm converting everything to XFS

I'm use ext3 and I can do up to 7 recordings (SDTV) at one time and watch a previously recorded show or movie with no problems. I'm using and external SATAII drive so my performance is pretty good. I may have to change when I start doing HDTV recordings.
