OT - Any experience with Chumby?

Just ran across the Chumby today and thought it might be decent for my 6 year old's room. Don't really have the expectation for video, but might give access to music and some other mild information surfing for her.
Wondering if anyone has any experience or other recommendations.

I saw the thread title with "cumby" and was scratching my head until I read your post

I've heard good things about the older version. I pre-ordered the new "Chumby One" and will report on how it goes when it arrives.

Doh!!! Any way to correct that?

Actually I was wondering if you would be reviewing it. Seems like a pretty neat little gadget for the nightstand and the price/features are better than the Squeeze radio, though I suspect the sound is not as good.

Also a little worried that the functionality seems to be tied to the companies service. Do you know if it will still be useful if the company does not survive?

BTW, I just created a Virtual Chumby so I can play with it a bit.

I've had one of the "classic Chumby's" for a few months now - it's a pretty slick little device! Apparently there are some widgets that use Orb to stream video to the Chumby - obviously it'd be great if we could do that directly through Sage.

I'm hoping to convince one of the dev's to create a widget that will allow Chumby to act as a 'plug-in' for Event Ghost and you could use Chumby as a bedside remote control.

Sony Dash on Woot today

Dredging up one of my old threads...

Anyone have any experience with this device using the sage web interface? Would it make a decent coffee table controller?

May have to get one and give it a go.

I think they are kaput, so the only ones out there are excess inventory/used.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Not dead yet

Sony licensed the Chumby technology for their Dash devices. It's a bit of a cross between an internet enabled alarm clock and a tablet. You can use it for internet radio / Netflix / Pandora / Hulu or generic audio podcasts. Would be really slick if someone wrote an app for Chumby / Dash that can interface with the RSS feeds on the Sage Webserver. Been trying to figure out some way to use the feeds for a video alarm, but it would be pretty cool to have a bunch of cheapy photo frame sized sage extenders around the house and on the nightstand.

My thoughts exactly... especially if the hardware is on clearance

Chumby is still going. They just brought out a new Chumby-branded 8" device.

For a while, Best Buy was selling two Chumby-based devices as "Insignia Infocast". One had an 8" screen, the other a 3.5" screen. The Infocast devices have been discontinued recently.

The Sony Dash still appears to be a current model.
