SageTV client - slow episode and video selection

Hi,

I've searched in the forums about this problem and I don't seems to use the proper wording because either I found lot of stuff unrelated or nothing.

The problem I have right now is very annoying because it render SageTV pretty much unusable.

So, the setup:

1 SageTV server on Windows Server 2003 with small local disk for recording and bigger NAS shared drive for long term retention
1 SageTV client on Windows XP
1 SageTV Theater HD
1 SageTV Extender first generation

The server record and work very well. I can use the SageTV GUI without any delay at all.

Both extender are accessing the sagetv server and have no delay either when selecting a video or a tv show.

The SageTV Client is another story. Everything work. I can watch a show, listen to music and all. However, it take so much time to move around that it is very hard on patience.

An example of what is long would be if I go in the Recorded TV menu. Then, I can see all the title the way I want. Now, if I want to see the description of a show, as soon as I 'open' it to get to the details, I have the rolling ball for about 1-2 minutes. Then, I get the details and can watch the show if I want to. Now, let say I change my mind and decide I want to watch a video (which is either a mpg or dvd stored on disks), I can still browse quickly over the thumbnails. As soon as I decide I want to open one, I'll get the same rolling ball for anywhere between 1-2 minutes before I finally get the details of the video/dvd I want to see.

I can watch those show/dvd/videos without issue so... bandwidth on the network is there and working (1 Gbps wired LAN). Everything else in SageTV is working fine. So, I don't understand from where the delay to get details come from. The server is a beast (Quad-core CPU with 8 GB RAM, I know, it is a lot too big but... was hoping to use this machine as a VirtualBox or VMware Server as well in the future).

Where should I look to get more details about what is going on? I've not seen anything in the logs but... I don't really know what I'm looking for either. A delay is something I would think a log would not report. But I may be wrong.

Is that a problem that was discussed before? Is there a workaround or a way to fix this?

Thank you for any help or ideas.

Hi,

On the server, very low (0-5%). On the client, it runs between 5-15%.

I doubt this is related to CPU performance because I can play the shows and videos just perfectly even HD stuff.

It is really just when I want to see details about a show or a video (which means each time I'm selecting a video/shows as it goes to the details screen before I can select the option "play".

I've changed my file server a few days ago but I can't see if it started to act this way at the same time as I didn't had the chance to use the client for about 2 weeks before that. One thing I know however is that all the shows are available and can be played both from Extenders and from the sagetv client so... the switch to the new file server seems to be working.

I was thinking it could be because of the name switch of the sagetv server but the sagetv client is using the IP address for the sagetv server so even if the name changed, the IP address is still the same. And, bottom line, thing are working. Slowly but still.

Is that helping?

Thank you.

Hi,

I found what it was. The client was still looking at old file server name for DVD Profiler and FanArt. I've fixed both at the same time so I don't know which one is adding long delay but... FanArt are not working now (even if changed the path. I have to look into this) and it is quick so I assume it is the DVD Profiler lookup that was doing a timeout.

Hope this can help somebody in the future.
