It seems like most people who have responded are not using firewire. I don't own an HD-PVR yet but what is everyone's view on firewire to change channels?

I have read that it can be a headache to get/keep working but when it does it is significantly faster than IR blasters.

I think I am ready to cry from happiness.

I installed hdpvr1.0.5.301_whql ( no hcwclear ), rebooted and I got 2 recordings without any lock up!

Too early to tell, but before, I could not even get a single HD recording without the HD PVR locking up!

Thanks to all of you for your help! I will report back later on if the water holds - too early to tell but looks promissing!

its only a headache to get working because there is no single "HOW TO setup your hdpvr using firewire channel changing for sagetv" guide... at least that i could find... so you have to read a bunch of separate guides and then glean from them what you need to do... when i set up firewire channel changing i remember saying to myself that i really should write it all down in case my system crashes and i need to do it all over again... but alas i did not...

that being said.. i didnt even attempt ir channel changing because of the slow channel changes / non deterministic nature of it... imo the only reason not to use firewire to change channels is if your stb will not work with the firewire channel changing program.

I have had my HD-PVR working with stability on two different computers. First on a old Dell P4 3.0ghz machine running XP Pro, and now on my new quad-core running WHS.

I struggled getting stability when I first got the HD-PVR, but soon found stability when I followed a specific set of instructions on loading everyrthing (A how to thread is found in my signature). The turning point was when I was told by SageTV support to uninstall their software prior to installing the Hauppauge software.

I've also used 1.0.5.301 exclusively with a DishTV VIP211k STB and only tried analog stereo. When I've tried newer drivers, I get instability issues again, so I've always ended back up at 1.0.5.301.

I'm using the 1.5.6.1 software, and only 1 lockup in ~4 months, but then I'm recording SD. (plan on getting HD ASAP)

I was getting an audio sync error, but after switching to the native patch, that went away. ?!?!?!?

ALL IS WORKING NOW

Reporting back that SEVERAL HD shows recorded and I had ZERO HD PVR hang ups / crashes / problems.

AMAZING! The trick was to install the old driver hdpvr1.0.5.301_whql for the HD PVR.

The driver that came with the HD PVR and the latest drivers from the Web for the HD PVR were both causing the HD PVR to lock up with SageTV.

Thank you all for your help!

hdpvr1.0.5.301 driver download?

I am new to the HD PVR and wasn't shipped this older driver. Would someone be able to provide a link so that I could try it out? Thank you...

Don't feel bad. I missed it 6x times . There is too much stuff to keep track of here....

P.S. Keep that driver file safe - it's golden!

I've decided to temporarily give up on trying to get digital audio working with the HD-PVR. It usually works fine, but whenever I try to record something on STARZ, there's a pretty significant chance that the HD-PVR will lock up at the very end of the movie (not the end of the recording, but as soon as the movie ends). It's fine for that recording, since it does make it to the end of the movie, but it locks up the HD-PVR until I can power cycle it, meaning future records are lost.

I'm not really sure what's causing the problem. It seems pretty clear that there's something in the video/audio signal that the HD-PVR doesn't like, and can't recover from. I'm going to try reverting to stereo audio this week, schedule a bunch of STARZ recordings, and see if it locks up. If it still crashes I might as well turn digital audio back on.
