Anyone successfully using USB-UIRT w/ Vista AND service mode?

I setup my current install on Vista a year or so ago, and getting the remote working right was a nightmare. I hacked together a solution, but I'm hoping now I can find a better one.

Is anyone using ALL of the following combination:

1. Using Vista
2. Running Sage in service mode
3. Using a USB-UIRT to BOTH send AND receive IR signals (receive from remote, send to stb.)

Here's a thread on the USB-UIRT forum that references the problem I was having back when I was trying to get it setup: USB-UIRT THREAD

I won't get into the details of the problems I had/am having until I know if there's ANYONE at all able to do all 3 of the listed items. It seems like there should be plenty of people with that setup, but I'll start by just making sure someone out there is doing it successfully...

You cannot do this using SageTV alone. The USB-UIRT driver CANNOT be shared by two processes running in a different security context.

Can you explain what you mean by "different security context"? I know that in XP the USB-UIRT could work as both receiver and sender with Sage in service mode, and I know that in Vista the USB-UIRT can work as both receiver and sender with Sage NOT in service mode. What I don't understand is why the combination of Vista and service mode seems to prevent the USB-UIRT from doing what it's able to in other setups.

Either the two processes accessing the USB-UIRT driver are using a different account, or are running in a different session (this will be always the case with Vista / 7 for services => they are running in a different session, whereas on XP a service could interact with desktop session)

So in Vista / Windows 7 the USB-UIRT must be managed by a single process.

What SageTV should be doing is handling both receiving IR and sending IR in the SageTV server process (and resend received IR signal to its clients : SageTV client UI running on the desktop). This is exactly what my software is doing and it works very well (LM Remote KeyMap handle all USB-UIRT events in its service and the service is resending USB-UIRT events to its listener processes => the LM RKM Desktop Listener, SageTV service etc...)

Regards,
Stéphane.

This sounds like a problem I was having on WHS. Just make sure that both the SageTVService.exe and SageTV.exe are running under the same User Name. You can check this by going into Task Manager. It is very possible that SageTVService is running under the SYSTEM account and SageTV.exe is running under the User account (i.e. Popechild). If that is so then go into Services and change the account that the service runs under to be Popechild.

As Stephane was discussing, I'm not sure it's just a user account issue in Vista/7 anymore, as services are still in a different session. I, personally, haven't messed with it, since I had for a long time just been running 2 usb-uirts... one for controlling my boxes in a closet, and one attached to the top of my television for the UI.

SOrry to bring up this old thread, but i think i am having this problem. I want to use the usb-uirt to both receiver and blast.

I am using the amazing lm remote keymap software. I have set up two blasting devices in the software.

When i go to set up my video source in sage, i see lm remote keymap and lm remote keymap2. These were there before i set up the blaster profiles.

Not really sure what to do, how to i know which is which?

jp, there are some updated drivers floating around somewhere that allow blasting and control from different user contexts. I have never used LMRemote though, so can't help you on that end.

As Fuzzy said there is a beta driver for the USBUIRT that allows it to be used for both receiving and transmitting with Sage running in Service mode on Windows 7 or Vista. You can probably find it by doing a search in the Sage forums, or you can contact tech support at USBUIRT.

However, you should not need that special driver with LMRemote KeyMap. It's only required if you are using the USBUIRT directly with Sage and running Sage in Service mode.

I'm not using LMRKM so unfortunately I can't be of more help. You might try contacting their tech support directly if no one else posts back here with advice.
