HD PVR 16:9 Recording with Black All Around (top,right,left,right)?

I am new to the HD PVR world, so bare with me.

I recently got an HD PVR and it's recording amanzingly good. Great recordings.

I understand that if a show is broadcasted in 4:3 format, that I will see a black box on the right & left when showing on my 16:9 TV. This makes sense since I have a 16:9 format and the original picture was in 4:3.

Now, every once in a while, I get a 16:9 recording that when it shows, it shows with black boxes on all side (top,bottom,right,left). It's like a rectangle withing a rectangle - equally proportioned.


What setting do I have wrong that it wont record filling up the entire 16:9 screen?

I am recording on a stand alone PC dedicated to SageTV and viewing with the SageTV Theater media extender.

You are probably recording a letter-boxed program on a non-HD station. This is called the window-box affect.

You can zoom it in by hitting the aspect button on the SageTV extender remote.
