one USB-UIRT to change STB/DTA channels and control Sage

I've been a BeyondTV user for several years, since BTV 3.5, but now it's dead to me. I recently redeployed from Iraq and will be building a new HTPC with 2x Hauppauge PVR-1250 and 1x Hauppauge HD-PVR. Comcast now uses Digital Transport Adapters (DTA). My DTA model is the Pace DC50X. I will use the HD-PVR for my HD STB to record my HD shows and one of the PVR-1250s with a Pace DC50X to stream TV to other PCs (whatever Sage's equivalent of BTV Link). I love my firefly but there are too many remotes for my setup (TV, Blu-Ray, Speakers, STB, Firefly) so I'd like to use one Logitech Harmony. Enough for the background, here is my question:
Can one USB-UIRT be used to control a cable box and be used as an input for an IR remote?

Yes, it can... But there is the potential for interference when SageTV is changing channels or controlling your cable box. Basically, if you press a key on the remote while your USB-UIRT is transmitting, it can interfere with the transmission. This translates into problems like the wrong shows being recorded because your STB was changed to the wrong channel or not changed at all.

I've been using this kind of setup for about two years now without much trouble. I only occasionally get the wrong recording, and its almost always my 3- now 4-year-old either turning the STB off or playing with the remote.
